Are you focusing your attention on the feeling of the cold water on your skin, or are you trying to distract yourself from it?

Both of those work too. Chair suggests the person called the meeting and cares about the outcome, where "facilitator" or "moderator" sounds more neutral.

"Facilitate" can have a very useful and precise meaning when used to describe someone who is running a meeting of some sort and their role is to keep it on track, making sure it progresses in a timely manner and sticks to the agen

Maybe it's more accurate to say it's a very recently adopted invention.

Great point about the timbres sounding different in transposition. I didn't realise the thirds were so off in brass instruments, thirty cents is a lot!

You can argue that the different keys of equal temperament don't have any special character at all, since they differ only by fundamental frequency and the relationship between scale degrees are exactly the same in each key. What chara

If there's a minimum length (the Planck length?) then space is discrete and the measurement bottoms out at some point, it would be infinite if space was continuous and infinitely divisible.

I love "deinforce" as an antonym to "reinforce". The standard way to say it would maybe be "deemphasised", but it lacks the symmetry of "deinforced".

Someone at my work actually suggested, with a straight face, that we do just that. I think specifically they suggested we stop referring to "gen-z" because there was a letter Z in it.

Every time I've tried to use a pi as a long-lived server, the SD card ends up getting corrupted. Switched to a chromebox running kodi for my media server, running 24/7, five or six years ago and haven't had a single problem w

If you want to know lots about how materials interact with light to look the way they do, including how the Fresnel effect contributes, there was a great talk at the Blender conference this morning about it. https://youtu.be/

The truth remains that in US culture it does have this gendered meaning, and in Scottish and Australian culture it does not. Context matters. Intent matters.

One notable difference is the c-word, which is a gendered slur in the US, but not in Scotland or Australia. I'm self censoring here because this is a US-run site and I'm afraid I'll get shadowbanned if I use it in full. I am

Equal temperament is better if your goal is to be able to play in any key. For some kinds of music this doesn't matter and alternative tuning systems could allow the composer to realise their goals more effectively.

Webb has two main cameras, NIRCAM for near-infrared, MIRI for mid-infrared. MIRI is lower resolution because it's looking at longer wavelengths. This image is from NIRCAM, so it's the highest res Webb can do. Neptune is small in t

A couple of gotchas that caught me: doesn't work with flat shaded objects, so no crisp gemstone caustics, objects need to have a decent amount of geometry - three levels of subdiv did the trick for me.

It has a couple, one for writing shaders and another for manipulating geometry. You can even combine them - outputting values from the geometry nodes to be used by the shaders.

I could never see stereograms properly, but I have no trouble seeing them by crossing my eyes. Unfortunately for most stereograms this inverts the depth.
