No, it means motivation would come from elsewhere, we're -as a society- just sinking further and further into a mindset where money is the one and only way for anything to get done. Sickening. The hammer was invented in spite of the

As the author explains, and I agree, Motorola gave Google a large amount of patents and a way to enter the phone market. The latter lets Google have more influence in how that market expands, in order to tie it even more with their existing

That's very interesting, considering our smallest nerve-cell -I believe- is about 4 ųm. I'm disappointed the article doesn't mention the significance of age, or even the average age of the study.

This one was on HN only a few months ago, it's beautiful, so much so I saved it to my phone. It's very interesting to see similarities and differences, and I get chills at knowing this is before it was bombed asunder. England was

Google added a permissions manager in Android 4.3, but it was removed again in 4.4. I never got to try it (went from 4.2 CyanogenMod to Nexus 5) but there are apps which do the same in the Play Store. They supposedly break a great deal of a

This was fun! Anyone else feel this is kind of a real-time Worms 2D? Wonderful to see "Download for Linux" on the frontpage, even better to see it's available in the Arch repos. Where is the donation button, though?

I wish more people did not write out knee-jerk responses every time this topic shows up on HN. When people are typing out a dissertation in a matter of minutes, quality takes the full force of the blow. There are currently more comments tha

The argument is the same as applied to governance, you don't want to give one person or entity too much power. I find the crusade against Google ridiculous for the most part, they're one of the few entities who are doing actual, q

I've never used anti-bacterials, not when it got introduced into dish-washing soap, and not when H1N1 created a ridiculous scare. This is one of those things where I take the elitist path and my palm hits my forehead at high velocity.

We're a far way away from seeing what digitization and automation will eventually bring. The Arab Spring would not have been possible if not for social media and the internet in general. It is a perfect example of machines helping the

Arguably, the unfinished-ness was part of what made World of Warcraft so wildly popular. There is much more to explore and enjoy in an open and chaotic environment, than in a streamlined and closed world. Obviously, we move away from it in

Retina is just Apple's marketing term for high-density display, and is something that's been common in PC gaming for a decade. Before the age of LCD my monitor had a whopping 1920x1440 res, many gamers opt into similarly high (16:

Rambo screenings would likely have a better effect, myself and others often get so pumped up by action movies we're one wrong tone of voice from going postal. Hijackers wouldn't stand a chance in such an airplane.

I've found myself arguing that point before, but brainwashing is a difficult topic. I now think it's wrong to claim it, because while the media in PRK obviously lies with intent and that is propaganda, most there probably do not h

The "community" has no obligation to keep people in, it is the individual's choice what to do and how to deal with anything resulting from that choice. As for women vs men, we all take our daily abuse, and in an anonymous onl

This is not really surprising, but it does raise one very important question for me. I have transferred funds to Mt.Gox and traded, will the authorities now automatically assume these are in the form of BTC, and tax me accordingly?
