I sure have. I've written k-maps and wired a multi-bit ALU by hand. My point is that those problems aren't any harder. They're just different. (in many cases it's because the toolchains stink by modern standards--embe

I guess my original post was focused on map/reduce problems; I meant it to be more general. We take our site response time very seriously, and therefore our application code and data layer has to be very fast. Yes boxes are faster and

Yes most signups are done online via a self-serve system; however, there is a lot of money to be made if you can produce custom deals, content, and ad placement with bigger partners.

IMO, that quote's garbage and really "back in my day". Our resources are just more powerful today. We still run into performance issues with things like bulk updates and computation times (MapReduce / distributed compu

I have a truly large head, so it's not really a problem for me. When I was reading reviews, there were plenty of warnings about improper sealing if you didn't have a large / certain shape head. There's a decent noise fl

Looks like macwright broke today. It's now showing an infinite redirect loop. It was definitely working when you posted the link; maybe HN hugged it a bit too hard.

Just on LTE-enabled cars? Think bigger! They're running a full fiber optic service; they have every packet coming into and out of your house. I, for one, welcome our gigabit overlords if only for the fact that they have Comcast, Cox,

Doubtful, I think. Raising venture rounds of any size (especially this one) takes a very long time! Bloomberg may have caught wind of the deal, however, and chose to release the story to capitalize on the press trend.

It's somewhat shortsighted, however. What if, by showing compassion to your family / children, you inspired them to benefit the world? If you inspire three of your children to do what you would have done yourself, you potentiall

I'm not a big BTC believer, but building that infrastructure for the paper money system took hundreds of years and is STILL evolving. That's to say nothing of how bureaucratic the entire thing was.

I ran into something similar interviewing at an NYC lab; loved the culture, loved the pre-screening interview, team was great, did well at the interview, didn't get the offer. I couldn't be happier at my current job, however. Jus

I have an HP LP2475W and a Dell U2412M; generally, among the IPS class, the consensus seems to be that HPs have more outputs and a better UI. Some of them are wide-gamut, however, which turns off a few purchasers. Research as to whether o

An anecdote, for sure, but a friend of mine just failed a Google interview for not knowing 'Dalvik' was the name of the Android VM, despite knowing it was stack-based and used, among other things, to avoid licensing fees. The non

I wonder if there would be some way to host the images externally (imgur, for example) and have a git hook to add the image links to a file that is version controlled. Depending on the markup, GitHub could pull the images in.

Awesomenauts is fantastic; I have over 100 hours played on that game alone. After 80 hours or so, I made the jump to Dota 2, where I have 300+ hours played in a much shorter timespan. In my opinion, Awesomenauts should be a mandatory 20+

Not sure if it's the case here, but in some sports (NFL iirc) players don't have guaranteed contracts. If a player makes no bonus but is supposed to earn $10 million a year, he gets nothing if he's cut. If he gets a $3,000,000 signing bon
