This is really cool. So do you have your own storage engine for the single node case, and you're using TiKV for the distributed one? Or is the local storage case also built on an existing engine like RocksDB?

Getting fired is not the same as being laid off. If they fire you for insubordination (which is what not reporting for mandatory office attendance would be) or bad performance, they don't have to pay you anything. If you're laid o

This is quite clever. I had tried a simpler version of this a few years back on AWS using LVM cache[1], attached SSD disks (for the cache) and EBS volumes (for the persistent storage). For our workloads (big data processing with Hadoop/

FWIW, Indian website blocks are usually DNS-based, so you can easily get around them by using a different DNS provider from your ISP's or DNS-over-HTTPS.

I spoke to an acquaintance at Google last week and they said they have to report to office at least 3 days in a week. Having said that - and I support working fully remote - I don't see how that's a solution to this problem. As ot

Having traveled overnight on trains several times, I can confirm that I would regularly wake up when the train stopped at a station. But this was probably because the train's state _changed_ from moving to stopped. In this case, since

I agree with this. My new washing machine has full-touch controls. It's great otherwise (includes full drying!), but it's way too easy to change the settings when it's running or turn it off when you're walking past it

I find this hard to believe. From an engineering PoV, an FB stint is definitely an indication of above average technical competency. It may also indicate you're ethically challenged - though I don't believe that's true of the

It seems to me that an easier way to avoid this problem is to not have monorepos in the first place. Uber's architecture is, AFAIK, heavily based on microservices, so I wonder what's the advantage they get in using a monorepo.
