Tamil Brahmins have mostly been at the receiving end of caste discrimination in the last century or so. It's one of the reasons so many of them emigrated to Northern parts of India and, of course, the USA as well.
EV Ramaswamy, revered even today as Periyar (elder one) in Tamil Nadu, (in)famously gave a speech calling for their genocide in 1973 [1].
Brahmins are mostly persona non grata in Tamil Nadu. There are 3 Tamil Nobel laureates, apart from the mathematician Ramanujam. Unfortunately all 4 of these were/are Brahmins. While laureates like Tagore are celebrated in their home state (West Bengal), you won't find any institute, road or even classroom named after these worthies in Tamil Nadu. Not unlike how Ahmadi Nobel laureate Abdus Salam was treated in Pakistan.
