Nice one for mentioning the North! I work for a startup in Manchester and it's a great tech scene (if a bit smaller than London, naturally).

From the article: "all else held equal, the poor would rather not work than work" I just don't buy that for a fraction of a second. So much of self-worth is tied to employment, and that's besides the creative urge that m

I just fail to see how it is 'dead' when all the key EU players intend to move forward with it before the elections.

Some great talks here. A question: has anybody got any good screencasts on either authentication with Ember (and a backend) and using Ember with local storage? Haven't found a huge amount online.[0] Trying to see what's workable f

And a chorus of silence from the general population. The bad guys won here, no matter how upsetting it may be to the general HN crowd (at least, if I've read the mood correctly).

Right, of course I'm not against an opt-in blocklist; people should have that choice as well. For something like a SIM, I can also see the business case - but again, that's a corporate decision rather than one that they're ob

I have Java/Flash disabled by default and yet it was still able to populate a fonts list for me. Forgive my ignorance, but surely that's not possible?

Even if it's not actually the 'porn law' itself that's causing this (rather O2's blocklist it seems) - the fact is that it's the same attitudes and discourse underlying both. Both are censorship and both are ma

Pretty much this. My old man was working with C and Assembly back in the day, I believe, and I'm an aspiring full-stack dev using Python/Ruby/JS mainly, so couldn't be more different! For some reason when I was growing u

The most striking thing about this article is probably the main image. It almost perfectly captures implicitly all of the outrage of the tech community over the NSA dragnet. All the hypocrisy in one neat picture.

Yeah, I would have liked more exposition on that point as well. Earlier, when talking about product design he says, "We wanted to change the world," so it would have been interesting to worry the tooth a little over modern technic

This is pretty much what Peter Sunde was getting at with this talk I think [0]. I agree though, I ended up having an argument with my parents on this subject. My old man's been working with software for goodness knows how long and he s

Yeah true, I think you've hit the nail on the head - much as I sometimes wish something like Python were the standard instead, the lambda functions are fiddly (even if the list comprehensions are great).

In all fairness though, it's very easy to bash JS, but the anonymous functions etc., that are really core to the language are pretty powerful. I used to hate it a lot more than I do now, but one day I realized that apart from its more

I think it's a great thing to aspire to (I certainly do), but yeah, don't think you could claim to be there until you'd put in some serious years, there's just too much to know, too many languages with too many weird edg

A question (not meant facetiously) but what's the benefit of this over say, Capybara/webrat, which already has the click and fill_in human readable methods? The block of example code looks pretty much like an RSpec/Capybara s

I think probably you need the context: Adam Curtis usually makes multi-part documentaries that span several hours, so his blogs have a pretty serious load on the old attention-span. That said, I've never yet been disappointed by the wa
