A recent scandal in the UK happened when the Mail publicly called a leading politician's father 'evil' as he was a Marxist. He was also a respected academic at a leading institution and fought for Britain against the Nazis, w

I hate the Mail because it encourages the worst in its audience. I have to believe that if the people that read it and I could reach a compromise if we weren't being so polarized by their reading material. Being "greedy, cynical,

That sounds familiar. I know somebody who worked on our student paper that swallowed their beliefs to go and work for the Mail because it was the only paper still hiring. Not believing in it doesn't absolve you from being complicit in

This is a fascinating article, but I can't help thinking that I wish they were more technically incompetent so it harmed their business. The Daily Mail has to be one of the most repugnant media organizations and if there is ever a just

There's an amazing section in the documentary Food, Inc. that deals with the consequences of this in the US. Genuinely disturbing, hopefully this is overturned or at least protested against before it can be enforced.

The idea that being employed gives your day-to-day life structure and meaning is hardly a new one, and the rest of the post just came across as a bit smug. Also noted that after clicking through the Amazon affiliate link the top review on t

At the risk of crossing the streams, this reminds me of the 4Chan thread also currently on the front page- "Actually interesting post [0 comments]". A very good article, I wish more people I knew had the patience to read it. Perha

Absolutely. Work a day job and freelance etc., on the side, but I'm free to drop the extra work if it gets too much and just live off a decent day job. Here in the UK it's tending more and more toward the US model, and I'm no

A better comparison would be reviewing a song by uploading it to Soundcloud and then using the 'annotate at this timestamp' feature to review it. If you didn't have permission to do so (as far as I know, Soundcloud has no lic

Whatever the intent of Rap Genius, at the end of the day, if they're using material that somebody else has the publishing rights to without asking permission, then they need to pay or take it down. Simple as that.

Taking a day out now and then is the best advice I think you can give - if you're the sort of person that's always hustling you sometimes get guilty about it, but that one day on the sofa playing video games a month will keep you

I think the bit that is very galling to everybody that works on the ground floor of the industry - that is, the writers, micro-labels, PRs etc that see the artists starting out - is that people keep talking about these majors as if they are

I don't think music is a dying art form, but the age of larger 'alternative' music having a look-in versus the lowest-common-denominator dross on the radio is definitely on its way out.

One thing that graph completely fails to address is the fact that economies of scale have massively driven all the good news there. For example, having a massive back catalogue means you can earn more from Spotify or Rdio. Good news for the

Totally agree, I've done other jobs that are so many orders of magnitude worse than programming that it doesn't bear thinking about. For all its flaws, coding rocks as a career.
