I single boot Linux on my 13" MBP retina. I use xmonad+xfce and it can be tuned to work reasonably well with Hi-DPI. There are still some things that don't work great (chrome), but it certainly can be done. My big problem is that

Neat. I've been using an ERLite for the past ~6 months. It does its job, but I'm not super excited by it. I find the Vyatta interface to be a little annoying (most enterprise network gear I've worked with just copied Cisco&#x

Wow, this sounds bad. It sure would be nice if Apple gave us a little bit more information, like when the bug was introduced and what exactly was not being verified. Until we get more information, you should assume the worst that all your I

Yes, that is the way most apps work. Netflix for example shows the video on your Chromecast and the controller interface on your phone. You can leave the app and the video will continue to play.

According to the aws blog[1] you can now launch these instances from s3-backed AMIs. Its not clear if this still uses an ebs volume or if it can now use an instance volume. [1]: http://aws.typepad.com/aws/2014/01&#

Most US companies incorporate in Delaware mostly because their courts and laws are business friendly. The filing fees are also cheaper than most states. See: - http://www.quora.com/Whats-the-advantage-of-incorporating-a-...

Yes. Recommending Applied Cryptography is usually a warning sign that the person doesn't know what they are talking about. In this case the rest of the advice is reasonably sound for an engineer that wants to start learning the fundame

Why would you think that Target OCRs CVV2? They already have CVV1 (used for card in hand) read off the magstrap, so what would they want with CVV2? It would also be an insane violation of PCI rules.

NO! Applied Crypto is at times a fascinating book, but it is terrible for a developer that wants to learn the fundamentals of crypto and how to avoid the most common mistakes people make. Its also really old at this point. A much better boo

Use ephemeral disks on EC2 and a good distributed database like Cassandra or Riak. These scale well as your data grows and allow you to lose individual nodes without losing data (in sane configurations).

If you care about uptime you should really get off EBS (and services that depend on it like ELB and RDS). Having a network between your disks and your CPU make outages like this one inevitable.

The official ubuntu AMIs generate a new key pair on first boot. The AMIs provided by Amazon do the same. If you're using AMIs from some other third party you should verify that they do the right thing.

That would be really useful. Along the same lines, one of the blog posts said that you chose to use strong consistency (CP in CAP). In the event of a failure, how many replicas (out of N) need to be down before the API returns 500s for read

This looks awesome. I looked through the docs and didn't see much information on what happens in failure cases. If one node that is storing a replica of my data goes down how long until the data is replicated to a new node?
