Because it’s still an issue. Dev alludes to a fix, but the update pop up still persists. Seems like it’s either low priority or working as intended. The issue isn’t the cost. I’ve gotten my value out of Sublime Text and would happily pay mo

So many neat things going on with Linux desktops. It’s unfortunate high DPI/mixed DPI support lags so far behind Windows and Mac. This has essentially killed Linux as a daily driver for me.

Definitely too general of a statement. I previously worked on real-time mapping and the only way to get the necessary write performance was to go unbuffered and manually split off a block at a time to write. The same was true of reading - i

I find such pitches more a reminder that we’ve somehow decided $5 is an acceptable price for a cup of flavored and slightly chemically enhanced water.

Julia is incredibly slow to compile. Far worse than C++ last time I tried. For interactive notebooks, I found it’s common to have a single line take a couple minutes to compile - it’s simply not interactive in the way Python is, despite hav

Does anyone know the credibility of this site or the journal this article is in? The subtitle is odd enough to make me question the legitimacy “comparison to California Safe Harbor Levels”.

I’ve always found mean life expectancy an odd metric. Median life expectancy seems more useful to answer “how long am I expected to live?” and appears to be 3-4 years higher in the US.

Even among previously respected outlets, there’s a trend towards more clickbait style stories. It feels like a response to losing ad revenue to social media and search which is unfortunate. Things like The Wirecutter have definitely lessene

There’s a lot to unpack there and I think it’s missing the point that extreme outliers exist but we shouldn’t expect ourselves to be one. It’s akin to saying some people win the lottery therefore it’s unsurprising if we do. Yes, some civili

John has existed for about a third of the time since the industrial revolution. This doesn’t leave much room for people who have earned more money, especially if it turns out John was an especially fast earner. Therefore, we shouldn’t expec

This seems like a vague generalization. In this case it was Lowtax vs all 3 of his ex wives corroborating the same story.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned the domestic abuse allegations. The Something Awful forums almost completely melted down because of that, and it’s certainly left me with a very negative final impression of the man who’s sense of humor I

This blames governmental failings on corporations, which doesn’t make sense. It also seems a lot less altruistic given the author has opted into Medium’s paywall.

Extremely bias research. Just a bunch of gotcha style statements to agree or disagree with like “More people are dying from natural disasters.” and when survey takers guess wrong they’re put in the “believes misinformation” bucket. Of cours

I’m not sure how these situations are comparable. Balancing property rights with use of force vs actively hiring hitmen. The former led to new laws and the latter seems to somehow still be celebrated.

Fair point. So HN folks who support unions who have previously engaged in hired killings but are against big tech which (to my knowledge) have not done so, why do you support one but not the other?

Jock Yablonski + his family and Jimmy Hoffa (who likely did the same himself). They’ve gotten significantly less violent in recent decades but I really doubt they have knocked off the organized crime.

I don’t quite understand the general anti big-tech-co/pro union sentiment on HN. Like somehow prioritizing engagement makes a group unforgivably evil, but literally hiring hit men to take out your rivals is no biggie.
