yea, buying a pc in the early intel era was a somewhat double edgded sword because you knew that the next generation would come out in a year or so and it would probably have more than double the performance.

i feel like not much has improved when working with teamviewer or anydesk over using x11-forwarding (plain and with compression) or vnc derivatives remindes of an old document by stuart cheshire

struggling with this question as well. obiously it is highly dependent on the individual, but in the end, it depends on the boss making/getting the connection and not be like "nah, but i relly could need an IT guy"

true hyperscalers got into building their own switches a decade ago. whitelabel silicon and software _IS_ available, but the entrenchement is still huge as noone ever got fired for buying cisco.

good point! it's far from 'required for the operation' it's just convenient. i.e. dumping waste enywhere is convenient and cheap, but if your business cannot survive otherwise, it's hard to argue for it's right
