Much, much more sophisticated. As far as I know target drones don’t even maneuver, let alone fight back.

Not likely, the reduction in memory clock speed is pretty small (I think only 6800 vs 7000 mhz)

People don’t talk about this enough. Public profiles are a huge surface area for whack jobs (or extortionists) to attack your career, relationships and reputation.

I believe many people do these things because they think they can get away with it. Subconsciously or consciously, malicious stalking is about the power that comes from harassing a victim who has no way to respond.

For anyone complaining about the injustice of this, I would remind you that, while I don’t like SBF either, he has not been found guilty yet.

If we are headed towards a post-labor society (which I doubt, but that’s a different topic), the first thing we need to do is radically reconsider how our society thinks about property and wealth. Otherwise, we’ll have a small class of prop

Yes, get the degree (as long as you’re ok with the cost / debt burden, which you did not mention). It’s very, very unlikely IMO that AI will take our jobs in the next 5-10 years. But I think the demand for good ML engineers will stay s

I’m no Tesla fanboy, but it should be said that publicly reported miles per disengagement metics are complete bullshit. Different companies have wildly different criteria for “disengagement”. Those reporting 1000mi+ between disengagements (

Exactly - using a robot may allow officers to avoid a kill or be killed situation.

Not necessarily - PTSD is an issue among drone pilots.

I'm not writing this as an argument for or against lethal-force robots, but I think there is some important context here. When people hear 'police robot' they tend to imagine ED-209 type robots blasting people, but this isn&#

You are absolutely correct on both counts. Olympic fencing blades are wider at the base and taper down. They’re designed to flex mostly in farther half of the blade, the base needs to remain fairly stiff or the sword would be weak in parrie

This is a fun puzzle! Great job. It took me a minute to figure out the rules, but I was able to with some experimentation. I think the lack of explicit instructions adds to the charm. There’s lots of other elements you could add to these pu

Yep, this. Artists who code are definitely a thing, and are highly in demand at game companies. That said, it’s always going to be way faster to create something with a tool (instead of code) if the right tool exists.

I agree, it grosses me out. Although I always found it appropriate that Palantir is named after an object tainted by Sauron, which corrupts those who look into it.

This is called tracking and it’s a common problem in robotics. Basically you are trying to figure out 4 things: - If I stop detecting an object, is it still there? - If I do detect something, is it noise or real? - If I have multiple detect

Radar has much longer range than IR. Heat seeking missiles are usually relatively close range weapons, i.e., less than 20 miles. It’s not stated directly, but my read on this is the new UHF radars can detect an F22, but cannot track it prec

I doubt 1 would be protected by the first amendment. It’s arguably equivalent to spraying graffiti on a stop sign so it’s unrecognizable. It would be an extremely difficult to enforce though.

Ugh, no. I’ve worked in a codebase where CI would reject changes that had too much ‘code complexity’. You’d constantly have to find clever ways to split up your code, when doing so did not make sense, to appease the complexity checker. Oh y

I think this is referring to inaccuracies of simulation which the RL model can learn to exploit. Sort of a local minimum that doesn't exist in the real world.

Many d100s use ‘00’, which I always interpreted as ‘100’. Fitting 3 digits on a tiny die face is hard.

As I understand it, SWAT teams are seen as very prestigious by both police officers and departments. IMO it stems from the fetishization of all things ‘tactical’ which is common in American culture. Many cops say their goal is to join SWAT

From what I understand, AWS does this at the org level, i.e., an org is expected to have a certain URA rate. This is not an unusual policy in the tech world. Personally, I hate systems like this. I can’t think of a quicker way to kill any l

I find this comment quite insightful. ‘Addiction’ is a complicated and loaded term, which may or may not be helpful. Sometimes, it’s more question of examining one’s life and making the very difficult choices necessary to be happy in the lo

Input lag while streaming is not that bad on a good connection. It won’t work for online FPS games (at least not if you want to win), but for slower FPS, RPGs, etc, it’s ok. This is based on my experience with Geforce Now, I haven’t tried S

I haven’t looked deeply at this, but sophisticated level streaming for large areas isn’t something Unreal supports out of the box. Very cool of them to open source this.

I’ve worked with UE4 professionally for several years - this is absolutely true. It’s hard to get really good performance out of the engine. Furthermore, it’s a beast. The codebase is large and old enough that making deep modifications is

Definitely not an expert, but I think it means you have a gene which causes eventual production of a prion. I.e., you produce proteins which have the potential to misfold; eventually this happens and prion disease begins.

I work for Cruise. For safety, our drivers keep their hands on the wheel at all times, including when the vehicle is autonomous. The vehicle you saw may have been in manual mode, but seeing the driver crank the wheel usually isn’t a good wa
