I'm confused how Go can be paraded as a low level systems language, which improves performance via concurrency, and yet the graph says it's compiler is still over twice as slow as when it was written in C?

Also the fox runs through objects that are even slightly complex, as it can't comprehend their depth (the camera woman). Another interesting depth issue is when it ran to the back of the table and straight on to the floor as if they we

"A spaced repetition system (SRS) is a way of efficiently repeating things you don’t want to forget, usually by using electronic flashcards. A SRS exploits the fact that if you remember something well you don’t have to repeat it as of

No tactile feedback, along with the fact the games don't look real, means VR won't be convincing now or in the far distant future.

All of this assumes I somehow don't know I have a headset on, feeding me fake imagery. It only takes the action of the spider to jump at me but me not to feel anything to remind me that I'm actually in an empty room by myself. All

Virtual Reality really isn't this immersive yet to be able to used for psychological torture, in fact the idea is almost laughable. Anyone that has used a VR headset knows that you don't actually think you are in the game, though

Is this an attempt by Mono to battle Microsoft's open source Roslyn compiler and upcoming cross platform '.net core' I wonder? Those two technologies could make Mono irrelevant in the future.

Yes this is correct. The worst part is currently the mono version Unity uses has a 'stop the world' garbage collector, the worse kind for a game as at 60 fps allocations quickly add up and the game can constantly freeze frame. The

This smells of biased fanboyism. Firstly Windows users make up of 50% of the graph, so why doesn't that get any interest? And secondly the difference between OSX and Linux is 4.5%, from a small sample group, not newsworthy at all. I ex

Ok sure, I opened up a 1000 SLOC file and copied until it was a 20,000 SLOC file, and performance was still fine. So I made it a 60,000 SLOC file. This time there was a small drop in perf as the editor caught up then it was fine again (not

You expect me to believe that with those specs Atom really runs like a 'complete dog'? The fact you also mention Sublime too really just tells me that your opinion was biased from the start. Finally, JIT compiled languages can be

Seeing as quite a few people here are complaining about the performance of Atom, I thought I'd give it a try see if there's anything to it. Cloned the 'Phaser' javascript game engine repo off GitHub and went through a fe

I see this comment every time an Atom post gets on HN. Are you sure it's not just your computer specs? If Atom continually makes the HN front page then many people must be using it just fine and like it? Personally I'm not sure wh

At least we moved on from hearing about a new Javascript framework everyday. Now we argue about how Go is/isn't a good language. Oh and whether AlphaGo beating Lee Sedoul marks the end of the human race, or means nothing at all.

At work our entire front end is TypeScript, and thanks to source mapping I've never had to look at JavaScript even when debugging problems. Typescript simply adds type annotations so you can get error underlining when you misuse a vari

I meant the NN speech synthesizer would ship with the game, and translate lines from a text file at runtime (a parallel process could keep a queue going on in the background for generated, ready-to-say phrases).

I'm not sure those two are related. A 'thought vector' seems far more advanced than emulating emotion in voice no? Though you raise a good point about text itself not carrying any weight behind it. Solution here could be to a

Well you can write down sentences whenever they pop into your mind, but you have to schedule a voice actor for a particular day and timeslot in a voice recording studio. Also the modding community would be free to add their own stuff easily

Interesting stuff. As a side note, I've always thought that if speech synthesis got good enough we could make much more immersive gaming worlds. Playing games such as Fallout, Witcher, GTA etc you keep hearing the same 10 sentences utt

People need money to live, people make money from proprietary games. People also invest that money and make even better games. It's not practical to only limit yourself to OSS. When I went to school years ago they used to have us do co

They did do this with DeepMind [1], before they pointed it at Go. Simple 2d games though, like Space Invaders. They said 3d games would be their next phase after Go. [1] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePv0Fs9cGgU

You build stuff out of low poly blocks. If your imagination can't comprehend that then you've missed out on much more than a game.

I think you've missed the point entirely here. Minecraft is a popular game that kids would play anyway, so if they can involve the game in an educational sense then it's a win win.
