"iOS has barely evolved since it was first launched" That's like saying laptops have barely evolved since they weighed 15 pounds. iOS has evolved a hell of a lot since 2007, and it continues to do so. Just because Apple hasn't slapped new

I sucked at it for years, that's how. To get good at design, you have to suck for a long time. You have to make a lot of sucky designs, of all kinds. Really awful, horrid stuff. You'll try hard as hell and come up with a bunch of turds for

One problem: It thinks that it doesn't take any time to walk from, say, Powell station to a street-level bus, so it gives you connections that you can't possibly make. This is the same problem that almost all transit apps have, unfortunatel

Only in Gemfile.lock. If you've hard-coded a version in Gemfile, you'll need to update it. Eg. These will update fine: gem "rails" gem "rails", "~> 3.2" This wont: gem "rails", "= 3.2.10"

It's not about "fanbois" (whatever the hell that means), it's about the fact that articles about Apple attract orders-of-magnitude more clicks, and PR-reposting sites like Mashable worship at the alter of pageviews.

I think you missed the entire point of the article. The author clearly explains why she believes that the above statement is the case, why Carly was so popular but failed to become a lasting commercial success. You can agree or disagree on

You absolutely can do it without COUNT. Just increment a counter value, the same way they're doing it in Redis.

    by guywithabike 14y ago

This doesn't make any sense to me. Why store the values in Redis and use Ruby to do simple math? If you're using Postgres already, just store the stats in Postgres and use an aggregate or window function to grab the stats. (And collect thos

Why not just search for "sfo" or "airport", both of which return the airport correctly on iOS 6's maps? Typing out "san francisco international" and leaving out "airport" seems incredibly contrived.

I find it interesting that the linked article is substantiative and provides data and thought-out conclusions derived from the data, whereas you replied with a snarky 3 word response. That's much of Hacker News in a nutshell.

In a full week of usage, I've yet to run into any actual, material problems with the new maps (daily usage in San Francisco). I'm using The Transit App for transit directions, and it integrates nicely. Sometimes business locations are 10-20

    > rather than continue to pay licensing fees until they got it right It's not like you just buy the data at Wal-Mart -- you have to negotiate licensing terms with Google and the terms that Google wanted were, reportedly, onerous.

I had the same problem. On a cursory run through, the app seemed pre-alpha in quality. Most things didn't seem to work, and what did work was couched in awkward and annoying animations and poor image quality (especially maps).

Just a heads up: that JS-induced header flickering is distracting as hell. Use `position: fixed;` instead of a JavaScript hack that constantly flickers the header in and out of the window.
