Surely Discord can't be counted as dark web? It's not web at all.

As far as I can tell, darkweb has no actual meaning anymore anyway. I saw an article recently claiming that something like 80% of people under 30 access the dark web at least once a week. 80% of under-30s use Tor? Seems highly unlikely.

Where are you getting that statistic? I have seen considerably lower numbers. For example, [1] indicates only 1 in 60 rental homes are owned by private equity. That doesn't even include owner-occupied homes. [1]: https://our

Isn't that the beauty of open source? That we are empowered to make tools that fit our needs and the needs of our users? I don't see why open source tools should be intentionally crippled in the name of some sort of "purity&q

Right. Housing costs for most people are a function of asking price and interest rate. For a long time, we had high asking price and low interest rate. That was mostly acceptable to people. Low asking price and high interest would probably

Have you seen the price of housing? Mortgage payments are twice what they were in 2021 for the same house, largely due to high interest rates. Of course people want big rate cuts.

There's a big difference when choosing technologies for a home computer versus a safety-critical system that will run for decades. Seems reasonable they would've chosen a proven, if slightly outdated, tech over a newer one that ha

Sounds like an exercise in futility -- why would the young "doers" listen to the elder "advisors"? History shows they'll roll their eyes at the (supposed) outdated advice from the advisors and ignore their wisdom.

Thanks to the FISA "court" system, I doubt US spy agencies fear any legal reprecussions. No need to follow the law if you have a secret court where no one has standing to challenge your actions.

There's plenty of wealth. The issue is the concentration of wealth at the top. Since the current system is deeply unfair, I'm not sure why adding additional wealth to the system would make it any more fair. The majority of every e

Yes, poor people are better off in absolute terms than 200 years ago. No one is denying this. The question is more that, given how prosperous we are, and how much capital we have at our disposal, why do we still have so many poor people? Wh

I don't doubt that you feel the difference between the two - but that doesn't mean there is a difference. Without a double-blind test, it's just conjecture. Audio is notoriously subjective, and existing research shows tha

Sure, but the high cost of housing has little to do with non-resident investors, and everything to do with lack of supply.

No, it's an extremely meaningful statement if your aim is to understand who is driving what. Without Biden's signature, there is no court. That doesn't mean Biden had anything to do with creating the order besides issuing and

While this is true, the comparison is meaningless without taking population into account. Only 1700 people live in Longyearbyen. The majority of Norway's population lives in the southern part of the mainland, especially Oslo, with much

Slight tangent, but same issue with the ongoing heat pump hype. "New heat pumps work in the cold now !" where cold is defined as down to 10 degrees F. That's probably sufficient for most "cold" places, but in Minne

Plastic is biologically inert, but the plasticizers added to modify the qualities of plastics may not be. From what I understand, that's one of the major concerns with microplastics.

It sounds like you may have delayed sleep phase disorder -- basically, a late-shifted circadian rhythm. I keep similar hours by default and was diagnosed with DSPD about 5 years ago. It explained a lot of issues in my life and was a relief

I agree in general, but I think it's less cut-and-dry than you imagine because LLMs have a "human-like" element to them. This surely impacts human response to what is being said by LLMs. As an example, the prompt "what a

If we incorporate cumulative effort, then the original assertion that AI art is low-effort falls flat. In fact, since AI is trained on a much bigger data set than humans, AI art is in fact higher-effort than human-made art (and therefore, a
