You can ask for a raise at any time. You should have a number in mind, and prepare to negotiate. You should have some accomplishments to cite, demonstrating your value to the business. If you don't have a good bargaining position -- no

The internet did not take off slow and it wasn't a hard sell. Maybe to home users in rural Canada, a negligible fraction of customers. Internet usage exploded so fast that just a few years after it became available to most people in de

Monty Python covered this a long time ago. To get rich, first you need to get a lot of money.

I may occupy a small niche of freelancers. I generally have long-term clients on retainer, or I charge by task/deliverable. I rarely have to track my time in detail. When I do I track in 30 minute increments, so I don’t need per-minute

Long-time freelancer here. As a solo freelancer I never had enough clients and projects at one time to need anything more complicated than a spreadsheet to produce invoices. Solo freelancers have hard limits on billable time and number of c

Some programmers will lose their jobs to LLMs. Those who lack confidence and give up because they saw a rigged Devin demo, for example. And those who can't actually deliver value now, because CoPilot can copy/paste from StackOverf

I think part of the problem you describe comes from confusing “skills” and “tools,” where tools can refer to languages, frameworks, APIs, etc. Employers may have exacerbated the problem, but it seems to me that programmers have mostly done

I have not got as far as coming up with an "ideology" about this. I include the $ to indicate a shell command, a convention I think most books and manuals follow. I don't find that makes copy/paste harder, at least not e

On MacOS and iOS/iPadOS with Safari you can choose Reader View, print (or share on mobile) and then save as PDF. I believe Windows can also save to PDF through the print option. Don’t know about Linux. Some web pages will have print-sp

Who bills by the minute? When I freelance hourly I bill in 30 minute increments. I know some freelancers who bill in 15 minute increments, others who round to the hour, or charge a day rate.

My first thought: I wouldn’t want a financial relationship with or obligation to customers who can’t manage to pay their bills on time. Introduce them to the envelope system of budgeting. For people who don’t live on the edge: autopay. Most

I use vim with ctags. vim has good autocomplete but I don't use it much -- I rely on memory and looking things up in the docs. With ctags I can jump to definition/implementation of a function. ctags has worked since the early 1990

I had a 1983 Osborne Executive “luggable” computer gathering dust in my garage about ten years ago. It worked but I had no use for it. I put it on eBay and Craigslist expecting a collector to buy it. Instead a guy in my city bought it. He r

On-call trouble tickets mean something unexpected and out of the ordinary happened. If it happens repeatedly that points to a problem that needs a permanent fix, not automation to handle it.

We have all grown up with fake images and videos, in movies and on TV, and then on social media. “AI” generated video makes the tools cheap and available, but doesn’t represent a novel way to deceive. I expect more of it. The fake images wi
