That tour looks like a worthy introduction, and yet I for one appreciate the old media approach here. It's nice to keep tutorial in one window, code in another, and build the examples on my own system as I would a real application.

I've been using Tent ( https://tent.io ) which also adopted 256 characters, and I think it's actually quite generous for statuses. Maybe too much; the nature of microblogging changes when you don't have to be concise. I bet the sweet spot i

Not true. Since last year, the reason Google is paying them so much money for search engine placement is because there was competitive bidding from Bing. https://allthingsd.com/20111222/google-will-pay-mozilla-almo...

It looks like the working URL is https://www.google.com.bo/ Found that out thanks to the technical details in Firefox's SSL error screen, where it says: "www.google.bo uses an invalid security certificate. "The certificate is only valid f

Absolutely. If I took issue with anything in your post specifically it was "Most users don't understand that there are potentially serious costs". This to me seems to implicitly blame the users for not understanding, whereas I'd blame Chrom

The Firefox "untrusted connection" screen ( https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/connection-untrusted-er... ) is much better designed. "Get me out of here!" is the only visible button and the obvious action. To override the SSL check, you h

Not solely. Opus is a hybrid of the SILK codec, which is more for speech, and CELT, which is more aimed at music. It can seamlessly switch between the two methods and use them simultaneously: https://wiki.xiph.org/OpusFAQ#Why_not_keep_the_

For audio at least, things are looking up. Opus, a new royalty-free codec backed by both Mozilla Foundation and Skype (Microsoft), has been standardized as an RFC[1], and will likely be mandatory in WebRTC[2]. So we should be seeing that ac

I consider myself fairly progressive about these kinds of things, and this is the first I've heard about "sexual preference" being problematic. Is it really used to justify the belief that what gender(s) you're attracted to is a choice? Wha

When you look at how badly CL's site has stagnated, and what a poor view most apartment searchers have of it, and then you look at the fact that nearly everyone uses it anyway, it's obvious we're dealing with a monopolist. No one who has re

But that data doesn't belong to Craigslist. To the extent it's copyrightable at all, it belongs to the user who posted each ad. And even then, PadMapper only reproduced a minimal number of facts on its website: price, location, subject line

Good point. Fortunately Firefox on Android is now competitive with Chrome, so we will hopefully see this start to change (though the rendering engine monopolies on iOS/WinPhone aren't helping).

This just shows how pictures communicate more efficiently than text. On a busy screen filled with apps, the words "Vacation reviews, photos and more" don't get read, they just get tuned out. But a picture of a beautiful vacation home grabs

I'm still not seeing a distinction. Your email account is already a single point of failure for every account registered with that email that has a "forgot password" feature. Maybe it would help if we considered two hypothetical scenarios.

You could say the same about any traditional username/password signup that sends a confirmation email and allows you to reply to an email to reset your password. Ultimately, that's just relying on the security of your email, too. So while y

It'd make even more sense for Mozilla, given they're a nonprofit with promoting openness and innovation on the internet as their official purpose. But yeah, Google support, although it would compete with Google+, might not be as far-fetched

rstat.us does let you cross-post statuses to Twitter. And most of the API restrictions have limited reading, not writing, so this feature may be safe for some time.

Completely false. Think of email. I've been told by people running large-ish, open signup websites that Gmail, Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail together account for more than 70% of users. But, so what? Three choices is already better than one, and

Interestingly, rstat.us already does this one way. You can post a status update there and have it automatically crosspost that update to Twitter for you. I've switched to posting most of my text-only updates this way, so my rstat.us stream

I read the core of 3taps' counterclaim — pages 25-30 — and I recommend it. It's a good read. Specifics of 3taps' scraping aside, I'm starting to see that this is a particular case of a general problem that also applies to Twitter, with its

I'd still think paying $100 more than the asking price (with no explanation as to why) would be a strong clue something is amiss in this case. But you're probably right that the use of English and the FBI enforcement letter are obvious only
