From 1988-1991 I lived in a hut in a small African mountain village. No running water or electricity, but I wrote programs on paper and waited with bated breath for every issue of Byte (several months delayed of course). I would read them f

I'm on about episode 108 of the podcast "The History of English" https://historyofenglishpodcast.com , which taught me about ampersand's origins. I highly recommend the podcast!

I certainly didn't see any of this when I was a volunteer in Lesotho (1988-91)! Then again, I was in the mountains where the nearest paved road was 3 hours away by 4WD. It used to take a month for letters to go to Canada, and another m

I was happy to sell my house and trade the loss of equity (and the last 10 years has been outrageously exceptional to the usual appreciation of property) for the freedom that living in an apartment gave me. Leaving for a month? Ask your nei

I would never wear a watch that had to be charged every day. My Amazfit Bip (stupid name, I know) is good for about 6 weeks if I don't use the GPS and heart monitor, and 2 weeks if I do.

Yes, and cable TV originally ran without ads (because why else would you pay for TV?), but once they had a subscriber base they started playing them. Bottom line: if they think it will improve the bottom line, they will do it.

Surprise, the physical layers in your DVDs and CDs is also decaying, so a CD from the 1980s may well be unplayable now. I've found that with many of my old commercial disks, let alone the ones I've burned myself.
