I remember having to shift those manuals to a skip when we replaced the VAXCluster with SQL 6.5 (bad bad bad decision othe than for electricity usage!)... I didn't remember much hate between the UNIX/VAX people in my org as they were pooled

I think the support status of OS X hardware (and software) is reason enough to switch to Windows or Linux for anything computationally intensive. They seem to throw it away at a whim. Dells Precision machines are cheap, last a LONG time and

Ahh the memories. At my first proper job, we had a 8 node VAXCluster running Oracle 7, VB3 clients on Windows 3.1 on Compaq and DEC machines, Motif clients on Solaris 2.4 on SparcStations :) The VAXCluster had 100% uptime for 4 years when t

I'll probably get downvoted to oblivion but Windows Phone 7.5 actually has most of these 'features' already!

That tends to matter less if you have a decent test harness and plenty of assertions!

Usually when something doesn't go as quick as you were hoping, profiling is unhelpful and you have to take the python bytecode to bits to find out what the hell it's doing inside. That happens quite a bit these days for me.

The thing I love about C is that it the most obedient of all languages and never assumes you are an idiot. Never does it tell me I'm about to blow my own foot off - it just does it and I've learned from the experience. Due to this it taught

I've thought this for years. Automation makes people redundant and you end up with people who consume but produce nothing. Those people are labelled as 'poor' as they are given minimal cash to survive on as they have no value to add to main

This is the first time I've seen SPICE used as suitable duct tape for a problem. Interesting solution! Thanks for posting.

It is but they've fixed it in MySQL and Ubuntu have pinned the HEAD mysql build to the broken one and have pretty much stopped supporting it. LTS my arse.

It was what was there as a piece of duct tape for the minute. I'm in the process of binning it all and moving to Debian which is actually trustworthy...

Doesn't surprise me. Ubuntu always ship fucked up, broken, shitty MySQL versions. Look at the one that is current HEAD on 10.04 LTS. It's got so much broken stuff in it, we had to move everything to a spare windows machine where we could st

I never had much of a problem to be honest and I built some behemoths which involved ASP.Net, .Net CF, remoting and all sorts of other junk in the same app.

.Net 1.0 code will run quite happily on the latest framework. We just pulled one of our apps up to .Net 4.0 and it took about 5 minutes. Not a small one either: 350kloc.
