Since OP is coming from SF, 100k+ feels like an absurdly low bar. That said, it shouldn't be too hard to get something close to Bay Area compensation in NYC.

A resounding YES. I'm a straight single guy, in my early 30s. I just moved a couple months ago after living in SF for 10 years, but I regularly visited NYC for 4 weeks every year, so I had some idea of what I was getting into. Here

It’s highly unprofessional for someone to disclose a job search to your current manager. I wouldn’t expect that to happen. Back channel references are a thing, but even they’re becoming less and less common

Haha, another Bay Area tech person here. A manager pulled that line on me, after he canned all my projects, and when I was dealing with COVID burnout and a bunch of family issues. I casually reached out to a few former managers, interviewed

I'm a burnt out security focussed software engineer of 9 years. I worked at 2 well-known Bay Area tech companies. The first 7 years were incredibly rewarding, but now I'm taking a year off the job market. At the end of my tenure,

> For some reason we can manage to prevent drunk agro people entering a club with the wrong shoes At least in the US, dress codes in nightclubs exist as a deterrent to individuals with gang affiliations. It's pretty racist. Guess wh

Yes, we're in agreement. A coworker of mine pointed me to the book Accelerate [1], which I admittedly still haven't read, which also mentions that organizations where management tries to make sure engineers are at 100% utilization

This doesn't answer your question, but it's worth pointing out that what "worked" for Sweden wouldn't necessarily work or flatten the curve elsewhere. Sweden has a healthy population, tons of spare healthcare capaci

I'd even go as far as label some of these behaviors as toxic, and not micromanagement. "Every task needs your approval" and "You need to be cc’d on every email" show that you, as a manager, are just a paper pusher w

I wonder how the calculus plays out. You could be local but within "commuting distance" of the office, which could include Sacramento, Tracy, etc. for an SF office. I think you could get a 2BR in Sac for the price of a studio in S

I also moved from SF to small town Illinois, and oddly enough my spending in SF pre-Covid and in IL now are about the same. In SF, I had a rent controlled spot and lived with 4 roommates. It didn't matter much because I spent most of m

Yes, because saving a dollar is saving a dollar, no matter where you go. Say I make $150k/yr after taxes in Silicon Valley and spend $6000/mo, which is about $72k/yr. Which means I save $78k/yr (and savings compound over

I think it's effectively closer to 2X than 4X. When I started as a new grad, I also had some RSUs and a sign on bonus. My employer didn't go public then, so my RSUs were not liquid, but I'd say my compensation was effectively

Gell-Mann seemed to insinuate that Feynman just made up most of his stories [1]. And even if they were true, he lived in a different era. Social norms have evolved considerably since then. Still, IME it's clear that gender dynamics are

Haha, well it's the same spot I was living in when I was making $120k + non-liquid RSUs. And since it was rent controlled, I never bothered to move. I'd be paying $3000 more if were to move into a 1BR, and I would rather spend tha

Not to minimize the struggles of suburban parents, but I do feel they might be divorced from what single urban life is like right now. As a "younger" (30 year old) tech employee, in addition to living in a cramped space with 3 roo
