I wish I could upvote you a thousand times. I hate it when pages have a fixed width -- that's what reflow is for. Let ME choose how I want to read the content.

Recently, I used Zig to write a utility that runs on my NAS (ARM-based) and trawls through all directories looking for SRT subtitle files; it then cleans up these files, getting rid of any subtitles that match any of a set of patterns (such

Some 30 years ago, I reverse-engineered the format of Prince of Persia's save files and wrote a little C program that would create a save file for any place / level in the game. Just because I could...

Reminds me of the pico editor -- pico means penis in some Spanish-speaking countries (it also means beak, FWTW). I remember contacting that project to let them know, I guess they thought it would be alright.

I have gotten a lot of inspiration, several times during my career, from this classic article by Jack W. Reeves (and its two follow-ups). Let cooler heads prevail. https://www.developerdotstar.com/mag/articles/reev

I suspect the real reason behind "some C programmers losing their shit" was being forced to introduce a new variable into the outer scope, or to use extra braces around your loop -- both are distasteful hacks, according to some.

This reminds me of a forgotten project I did for a previous employer. We had a lot of MySQL databases and wanted to be able to run test environments that were much lighter than production. I implemented in Typescript the minimum of the MySQ

This is partially wrong. Perl compiles the program to its own internal representation in one go, which is then run in a VM. It also uses reference counting, it does not have a GC. It is true it doesn't have a JIT, though.

I hope this does not end up being the beginning of the end for dd out of misguided minimalism (as with egrep and fgrep). Skipping input / output data is of course one of its main uses.

This is just a word, which although originally means "fifteen days", it is actually used for "two weeks". The same thing happens in Spanish with "quincena" (which, confusingly, could also mean "fifteen day

I was going to start this reply by saying "I am not necessarily defending / supporting ghoward's position", but after I read his whole reply, I realize I am. I enjoy writing C (more than C++); I do not find it awful. If

This sort of atavistic, ritual distrust of C (and C++) code is tiresome. Keep in mind that most likely all of the highest-traffic sites in the world are using C (or C++) systems to process their own trillions of transactions. I recently wor

I know you are joking, but one-liners in Perl are a long-standing tradition, and also the way many people learn some of the language's intricacies. Once you have your prototypical one-liner down pat, you grab it and make it into a prop

Most, even all of these, sound to me like cargo-culting. I certainly use multiple returns and continue statements all the time. I pass structs by value when I want to stress that they represent a value type that can / should be copied

I have used this parser generator and it works like a charm. The only thing I would change is the way it is distributed: the links at the end point to a sort of amalgamation of the actual sources that make up the parser generator (in the sa

Last time I dabbled with tup, I remember it was not trivial to support any process that generated more than one output. My use case back then was lex / yacc: you can generate a source and a header file with them (and even some other ou

I am thankful to you for highlighting this part of the long paper. That completely wrong assertion (the input to sort is infile, nothing more, nothing less) casts the rest of the content in doubt (at least it does to me).

This is simply not true. I have been using Linux (Ubuntu) on my work laptop (Dell) for at least four years, and have used Linux on my personal laptop for much longer. Please don't spread FUD.

This is why experienced programmers will choose closed-open intervals by default -- they sidestep many of these pitfalls. For your example, you would do ... and date >= '2020-02-13' and date < '2020-02-14' -- n

I personally favor it because I find it abhorrent to load a bloated electron application to do... text editing, but I also wanted to have some of the niceties of a more modern editor. This is why I am giving it a try (and, so far, liking it

Thanks for that! I added -a to fortune, so every once in a while (but not always) I get an offensive aphorism -- yes, I am willing to be offended! NOTE: this may require installing the offensive fortunes package.

Please don't do this. There is nothing that says CLI utilities (or any other programs for that matter) HAVE to be written in Rust. This type of comment puts me off Rust, slowly but surely.
