I wanted to chime in and say that this is exactly how I approach difficult problems. It has worked for me over and over again, and I have trained myself to go against my natural instincts and just drop something after a while, knowing tha

Anybody knows what the grid of numbers on the last page, grouped under "Fibonacci Numbers", is?

The point is, it is hard to get to a rough idea, when you don't do the work needed to get to that rough idea. Even worse, many times the stakeholders don't really know what they want, and you are faced with unstable requirements;

I did notice them as well. I wonder if the original video had already been edited so that the swastikas were (in my opinion) mostly clipped out, or if this is a more recent edit...

I want to answer trying to interpret the GP. For me, I want to be able to tinker with Plan 9. I love everything I have read about it. But I also need a practical environment where this is possible. I would love to be able to do minimal

I personally disagree. I don't see any poisoning in the original bug report; furthermore, I think it conveys the issue (and some of its subtleties, such as referencing "modern CPUs") much more clearly than the version you pro

Kudos for the trip down memory lane regarding ACE. What an amazing library that was. Great abstractions in a language that might have not been 100% ready for them yet...

I have looked into this in the past, and have always felt discouraged by the lack of good support for modern keyboards and mice. With ncurses and similar, you can only detect (a subset of) keys modified by Ctrl and Alt; I would like a porta

This reminds me of the movie The Name of the Rose, which I love. One of the characters was named "Jorge", and he was from Spain, so it was really baffling to hear everyone calling him "Yorgeh"... I guess they didn't

This is awesome. For a long while I have wanted to write character-based applications with greater control of the keyboard; think "a terminal tetris that can recognize key combinations such as Alt-I, Ctrl-J, Alt-Ctrl-PgUp, Meta-Ctrl-F1

That was my second Casio "calculator" for Uni, loved it. It had a huge display with four lines :-) -- my first one was a Sharp (Radio Shack) with a single line. Both programmable in BASIC. I can still remember the fog clearing o

I have seen this happen, first hand, in the public sector. I used to work with two guys in a company that shall remain nameless. After a while, they started taking some of the team to lunch every Friday. Not a quick, frugal lunch, but lunch

A big fat YES from me. I have been looking into TUIs lately, and the state of terminal handling is ridiculously bogged down by years of cruft that, honestly, I don't give a shit about anymore. To put it succinctly: I want Alt-Home and

Ok, let's talk about this... pico, the editor and SI prefix, means "dick" in at least some Spanish-speaking countries... Source of endless nerd jokes.

Thank you so much for this answer, which fits my question perfectly: it provides a plausible reason for the meager offer of packages for Plan 9 (the reason being the fragmentation of the ecosystem). I second your hopes that this situation

Seconded. I am a back end developer and had a lot of fun watching your Svelte Sapper series; thanks for your work! Quick question: which color scheme are you using in VSCode? It looks a lot like jellybeans for vim, which I love.

I cannot tell if you are responding tongue in cheek (in what seems to be a Plan 9 tradition) or being serious. My points are not that any of these tools are better or worse than the others; I am trying to say that I would like to play with

Plan 9 elicits in my head the same kind of thoughts as Lisp -- I find them both extremely appealing on an intellectual level, and can't help but wonder why there isn't more of them around in the "real world". As a softwa

This is the second reference to The Catcher in the Rye I see in this thread... If Great Gatsby is anything like that book, I don't want it any closer to me than orbital distances.

This rings a bell. I remember reading a book that sounds like this, some 35 years ago... It was my gateway to discover The Hobbit, since one sentence in this book (which wasn't that good) mentioned these geeks getting together to play

I believe it was at a scene where they were having dinner (lobster?) at an expensive restaurant, and one of them goes ballistic for some reason. Le Carré was sitting at the next table, if I am not mistaken.

I have this series but I have not been able to find subtitles for it (even in English), and the accents make it hard for my non-native ears to understand everything that's being said. I would LOVE to get my hands on working subtitles;

The movie is very, very good too. Richard Burton is outstanding in it, and his laughter is unmistakable. Too bad we barely get any Smiley at all, and what little there is, is totally forgettable.

These two series are absolutely the best that has ever been produced for British TV. I am enthralled every time I re watch them, which is maybe once a year. Thank you John le Carré for such an outstanding, mesmerizing story. Thank you Alec
