Agreed. I think the stack exchange sites hould just openly state: "If you ask a questions that harms the ego of any of our mods, your question will be summarily closed. Be advised that our mods identify with the technology at hand, so any c

Ditto on this. I feel you usually have to know where a setting is so you can know where a setting is. There might indeed be a criteria for the separation (ie, sudo vs non-sudo), but the fact that it is not readily apparent makes it (imo)

Amen brother! A happy customer is a great source of revenue over time even thoguh you may take a hit from time to time. How big a hti you take depends on how good you are at what you do, and how good the client is (as far as helping you d

I thnk we are talking about the same thing... Based on estimations, it is always a goods idea to add a certain room for error, additional expenses, etc... I did not say multiply $20 times the number of hoiurs, I just said that you need to

LOL, you just don't know how to estimate how long it's gonna take, or you don;t specify what needs to be done well enough. Lots of people work for a fixed price with happy clients and they end up being happy with the outcome too (myself inc

For me it's simple. Paul Graham is the guy with the money, the one that is "making it." I love Ted Dziuva, and for all of his humorous, scathingly accurate (most of the time) insight, he Ain't all that good a businessman. So when it comes

This is dumb.. The more choices you have, the more confused the person choosing is. Sorry, but having too many choices does not make the choice easier. Also, of course you know that a "good" distro is, but someone just coming into the fold

Is this really a surprise? If we wanted completely fair elections, there would be no unequal campaign funding, no TV, a 6 month pre-election gag, etc... etc... Anyone speaking to a group of people about the election gets more than one vot

I'm part of the "I don't do this myself, but I manage people who do" crowd. It's always good to see these types of articles on here. They keep us from being totally ignorant about the mechanics of our own projects. Thanks!

Not everyone's built to be an entrepreneur... Nothing wrong with that, all of us that are, we need employees ;-) Just cuz you are capable of doing it does not mean you should.

I think it depends in the industry. If it is a "good ol' boy network" (ie, banking), then hire from within the industry. Your new guy will already be "inside the club," and will be able to get right down to selling. If you are in an indus

Since when do people have a choice? Instead of "don't do dull work" (which might translate to "don't do what you are asked to do"), I say you do the stuff you hate as fast as possible. Engage it with zeal, and get it the heck over with as

It's not about being condescending, my point was that the manager of the OSS project was a bad manager. A bad allocator of resources. That's pretty much it. I have no desire to get into a Technology A vs Technology B pissing match so I'll
