The more successful someone is with a behavior set X, the less likely they are to feel that they should change anything about X. Today’s best example of this is Trump.

“Barbaric” is largely a matter of opinion. What I find barbaric is that someone press on some of the most vulnerable people in society, ruins their lives, and is allowed to proceed with just a library fine. It doesn’t create any negative in

Well it’s possible that AirPods or other earbuds will eventually have capabilities that allow you to hear much better than normally, like a conversation 50 feet away or sounding an alarm when a relatively silent electric car is approaching.

The word programmer was not invented to describe people who invented an operating system and then invented the canonical programming language for operating systems.

Good point. Perhaps the best would be "Prominent librarian wins surprise judgment..."

Yes, but calling her a librarian is like calling Dennis Ritchie a programmer. It’s 100% true but doesn’t really tell the full story.

That’s true, but I’m not sure what it adds to bring up a much smaller-scale problem, although very real, in response. It’s like I said: “The coal industry is a huge polluter and we’re finally thinking about how to end it.” And you replied:

The use of the word “librarian” here seems designed to evoke stereotypes of a short old computer illiterate lady who fought The Man and won. Jessamyn West is not that kind of librarian — see her Wikipedia bio for more detail. It would be no

Every industry where powerful men are gatekeepers is like this -- some are just higher profile than others. Politics, film, and other high profile industries will be first to be publicized, but it exists everywhere.

They're all American in some measure as they are all living in the US at MIT. But they are clearly immigrants or the descendants of immigrants.

Look at the list of names on this paper. We better fix our immigration system for high skill individuals.

That would be off-brand. Most executives speak very demurely to the public about their interest in making money.

Crazy to think that just $210 billion can buy you 480 companies in the S&P 500. China could easily do that.

Not to mention, “we” is a pretty varied group. I’ve met Uber drivers who were refugees trying to survive in America and I met one who was a retired Stanford surgeon who just liked to get out of the house and meet people a few times a week.

I’ve ridden a Segway and a scooter and the scooter is MUCH more fun for me. The Segway is like “whoa this is cool” but the score is like “Wheeeee!” Makes me feel 5 years old again.

At some income level, there isn’t any difference between 1 penny and $3. It’s like getting a coffee, people can spend a lot of money on them thoughtlessly. And many people wouldn’t want to own their own scooter. I would rather not have to c

This is just an uninformed rant. Uber got me hooked with very low pricing and now I continue to use it heavily even though the pricing is much higher (not taxi level though) and I own two cars.

Interesting to see how much intellectual rigor is in the theory of Bitcoin, and how little in the long term market. It’s the exact opposite of most startup sectors.

In the last 12 months it’s become clear that Musk relies on the same defensive self-aggrandizing bluster that makes Trump so ridiculous. Quite a quick trip down from demigod for him.

Toys R' Us was dead so many years ago. I went there once to buy a present for a kid and it was just so depressing and not at all a fun or cheerful place. When I had a kid of my own I never took her there. I regret it not being what it
