I used to be a smoker. Every year or so, I'd quit. I know some people have an easy go of it, but I was Mark from Trainspotting, watching that baby crawl on the ceiling. Every time I started smoking again, I'd curse myself, until I realized

I've been experimenting with being a joyful and optimistic programmer, and I feel a real difference when I code. At first, I started with little things, like leaving semicolons out of my JavaScript. I understand the subtle bugs that may man

This is an embarrassing low point for Hacker News. Trolling, exaggerated headline on the front page. It takes almost no effort to make a reasonable counterargument, so I sense that's not the point of the submission.

jashkenas is one of the most prolific and talented JS devs around (CoffeeScript, backbone.js, underscore, docco are among his credits). I can see why he and other library producers would want as much flexibility in the language as possible.

This is true for the most part, but there's a subtle edge case. Within a nested function, variables used in loops will redeclare within the inner function: -> outerVar = "outer" -> # this will output "undefined"

Yes, though never enable strict mode (in JS) unless you know exactly what it does. `use strict` causes some subtle semantic shifts that can be easily overlooked. For example, there's no dynamic binding between the `arguments` object and a f

I'm looking forward to discussing this, but in the meantime, can anyone parse "Similarly, I think we can find a way to repair “this” binding foot-guns with softly-bound “this”." for me? I don't understand what "binding foot-guns" are.
