I understand some people have problems with the Flash platform, but at the moment it's the best option for a few large classes of web-based games.

I'd say that simply because something is rational doesn't mean it can be codified into a computer program (yet). (Maybe my example code disrupted my point more than helped.) The design of most computer programs is rational, but a computer i

The rationale for the decisions da Vinci made while painting the Mona Lisa are actually pretty well documented http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mona_Lisa .

No, cutting off his ear wasn't rational, but it also wasn't art. I think a reasoned process is rational, but maybe this is getting into semantics.

Most art is most definitely rational, deliberate, and reasoned. It doesn't appear so when you're thrown into the deep end (personally, although I'd been exposed to it countless times, it took me a while to appreciate work like that of Mondr

Just to clarify: no robots were involved in photoshopping the image. Regardless of the author's "trusted source's" statement, the image is clearly shopped to remove the score overlays on a video still (as @mrnibbles http://news.ycombinator

I'm really disappointed that this is the top voted comment at the moment. @jsprinkles, it might be worth considering that your tone mars an otherwise worthwhile post.

Did you see the documentation in the wiki? I ask because it took me a while to find it initially, and even then, re-locating it was sometimes difficult: https://github.com/jashkenas/coffee-script/wiki/%5BHowTo%5D-...

I don't completely agree -- I feel like CoffeeScript shares as much in common with Ruby and Python as it does with JS. I'd say a good developer would be the best fit for a CS position; depending on your deployment platform, I can almost s

I'll agree that while a project is being bootstrapped, peer code review could be cumbersome. Once a project has matured enough, some amount of code review, done incrementally, shouldn't be a burden. At that point, if you're typing out reams

This is really great to see -- correct me if I'm wrong, but Trevor must be one of the biggest contributors to CoffeeScript. It's great to have someone so intimately familiar with the project author one of its first books.

To add balance to the statement about asking an art student to give an opinion of your work to get your ego stroked, I had a far different experience. I went to art school, and from foundation year (where you learn a smattering of everythin

In `A Theory of Fun` , Raph Koster writes about games being learning and teaching tools. When my brother and I would play 'soldiers' growing up, we were safely simulating, and learning from, what it would be like to be a warrior (evolutiona

Why do you say RTMP is an abomination? (I feel like the comparison chart you linked to didn't make so strong a case -- are you speaking from experience with the technologies?)

CoffeeScript's golden rule is "It's just JavaScript". You need to learn JavaScript (or, more importantly, understand JavaScript) before moving on to CoffeeScript. JavaScript is a weird language, especially if you're coming from a backend la
