Fermi problems come up all the time in computing Hm. I've never faced any such problem. But then, I do uninteresting stuff like deciphering horribly documented APIs and writing desktop software. If I go into an interview for a desktop s

Did you ever think that I was there and might have taken note of such a thing? There's a difference between "I don't eat meat" and "I don't like corned beef." Do you ever give people the benefit of the doubt, or do you always exploit omis

And there are some people who are perfectly well socialized who are also sexist jerks. Okay. I maintain that in the tech community , it's horrible social skills that's driving the majority of what appears to be gender bias, sexual haras

I don't think anyone, with good or bad social skills, should have to deal with this crap. Of course not, and I didn't want to give any impression that my statement endorsed the behavior. Rather, I think that it might be more productive to

In SF, I witnessed the classic: guy offers sandwich to 'hungry' homeless guy. Homeless guy responds, "what kind is it?" Apparently, beggars can be choosers.

I think this is largely the expression of terrible, terrible social skills. I've seen appalling things toward women and men alike from young, socially inept Bay Area tech males. Also, for what it's worth, I've received a lot of crap from w

Regarding planning for the future, this seems like someone who was used to buying machinery was put in charge of buying technology. Sure, in five years the library might need a gigabit of bandwidth, but by then the Linksys WRT may well han

The Reddit question wasn't really what I would consider relevant for HN, but I personally found the ethical issues at least a little bit interesting. I commented on it: my thoughts being that he should stay under the radar of management a

F.lux has a preference for transition. True, but as I recall it still behaves oddly in some circumstances. Change your location to a point two hours to your west? That's the usual suggestion, but then you have to change it back if you r

I use F.lux. I find certain things about it irritating[1] and I don't see any signs of updates or improvements from the author. Unfortunately, it appears to be patented, which rules out the possibility of competition spurring improvement.

Go to any interntional company's office in Singapore, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur and note that it's filled with Brits, Australians, New Zealanders with very few Americans; this is why. Americans are exempt from the double-tax up to $91,400.

I've been to two conferences in my life. One was, I think, a Bluetooth conference back in 2001 or so. I learned nothing. The other was a Flash conference in 2004ish. I learned nothing and was appalled at the low quality of presentations
