There’s actual science on this. Evolution wired our brains to place a VERY high value on novel information. Something out of the ordinary could mean you were about to get attacked by a lion. Or, could be something useful to your survival. T

I’ve said this many times before but keep in mind that people were strongly opposed to the 40hr workweek and it ultimately led to higher productivity. Less illness and injury, primarily. Source: The Rise and Fall of American Growth.

Very sexy setup for that era. As a kid I went to a computer faire near my hometown in the relative middle of nowhere and not only did I get to check out a Video Toaster, there were two guys there with an Onyx. As an SGI obsessed dork, I alm

Standard disclaimer that I’m not a doctor and this shouldn’t be taken as medical advice, but you might find cognitive Behavorial therapy interesting. The gist is that there’s a common set of cognitive distortions that we fall into. Things l

Leverage, as a principle, is so important. I always try to keep the 80/20 rule in mind. But perhaps most simply put, if you're working harder and harder and not seeing results, then you're probably focusing on the wrong thing

Not weighing in on whether one should be frightened or not, but just pointing out that what you said would have applied to the computer graphics industry about 30 years ago. The interesting thing about computers is they tend to get faster o

Our large west facing windows get way too hot so we had this 3M film installed that essentially tints the windows and blocks UV. I’m a HUGE fan of it — in many ways it actually improved the view out the window by reducing glare.

Modern is usually referring to mid-20th century in terms of style. Post-modern doesn’t include everything after that — it’s kind of a mess to describe but probably the simplest explanation is that post-modernism is a reaction to modernism.

Meditation. Amazing how quickly even a few deep breaths can make you aware that there really only is “now” and that past and future are illusions.

I bought an old eroded farm with my wife and we’ve been restoring habitats, placing parts of it into conservation, and working towards regenerative farming practices. We also went pretty much entirely plant-based with our diets years back,

First read this in the early 2000s in college and honestly didn’t quite grasp it. Revisited it later, and still didn’t quite grasp it. Was only a few years back, when I looked at social media through the lens of the book that I finally got

My daughter (7) really enjoyed Scratch — so much so that she asks to do it often, and went and watched all the tutorials on her own. She internalized concepts like loops, user interaction, etc. It’s a nice environment and for me, it’s all a

Everyone is always seduced by the new — the new idea, the rewrite. But often what one finds is that as development goes deeper, the same bugs resurface, the same challenges. Our society is full of grand, ambitious, “let’s do it right from s

Right? Our worst problems here seem pretty mild compared with the expense of a meaningful human establishment on a far away rock. It would be massively cheaper to build settlements on the most hostile desert on earth. But more importantly,

Technically true. But inflation as a function of monetary / fiscal policy is top of mind for many right now — and what most people picture when they hear the word — and so it’s helpful to draw a distinction.
