Just out of curiosity, about your Angular project, how large is "very large" in terms of component, module count? How long does it take to build? I'm not satisfied with what I see in my current project at work, but that may b

Everyone pays for their internet access, so why should Netflix (or anyone else) suddenly pay for mine? Netflix isn’t pushing data, I’m pulling it. If my ISP is losing money then I guess they better raise their prices, no?

Maybe forums were already perfect. Sure, design could always be updated. However, what's wrong with vBulletin 4 UX? Nothing. It works in all conditions. Not some self-updating battery-draining endless scrolling website. Yes, I'm l

The Nexus 5 issue was just an example. Even phone makers are totally dependent on Qualcomm etc. providing drivers and maybe updates to those drivers. It's not like you can just hack updates together yourself. Not always anyway.

Except you cannot. The graphics driver of my Nexus 5 no longer receives updates. It is not compatible with newer Android versions. And… that's it. Just like that, no more updates. Less than two years after I bought it.

Why not. Here's the thing: tired of it? Just stop and do something else. Can't do that at work. It's just mental exercise.

Unless it’s some arcane setup, I don’t see what would break from one developer trying stuff on a branch. Even if you don’t have your build pipelines in the same or any repo, you could probably clone then modify them on a reasonable CI serve

Not that I’m a fan of Yarn 2+, but this view strikes me as narrow. Setting up and upgrading the development environment is actual work , too! If you don’t treat it as such, developer efficiency will suffer in the long run.

I have a small toy project (essentially CRUD for images + tags + descriptions) that has a React frontend, mostly old class-style components. Having rewritten this frontend using Vue 3, my impression is that Vue 3 with its Composition API is

I tried it once but installation was incredibly slow. I had more luck with PNPM. For standalone projects there’s probably no benefit to be had.

Not sure which "concept of credit score" you might be referring to, but in Germany, there's Schufa (among others). They calculate a credit score using secret formulas. So I'd say it's pretty much the same.

Because in most western(?) states, the entirety of education and (junior) hiring is just a load of bs. I totally understand too, it’s super easy saying “oh for this position we require X, Y and a PhD in Z”. It’s guaranteed to filter out lot

Munich is very expensive so you get appropriate money. Rural areas pull down the average a lot. As a software engineer (not architect, senior, team lead or whatever) your salary is at the very top.

I agree with most of TFA. However, I urge everyone to start with a monorepo. Splitting a single project (developed by one team) into multiple repos will seriously slow things down later. I've seen it happen.

Hm? Actually you can indeed test CI locally, if only one step at a time. This is a very very rare feature. It’s gitlab-runner exec . Also, I find that running your own runner is super easy and straightforward.

It's not true though. Due to unique circumstances and regulation you usually have lots of "virtual ISPs" to choose from. There is no real incentive to upgrade the network outside urban areas though, that's true.
