I agree. I think there are really two levels of privacy. I would like to keep my Netflix preferences private in the sense of not posting it on my website (or Facebook or whatever). But, if someone was interested in sinking enough effort to

Allow zipcode entry. Dragging the wee man all the way from Hawaii to the mainland so I could see what this thing did was a drag :-) Anyway, people don't always support their geographically closest team. (I have no comment on the actual usef

My experience is that people, starting from when we are kids, do notice gender and that the path of least resistance is to do what other people of your gender are doing. So if you’re a girl interested in programming and you see very few ot

My problem with the "different learning styles" theory is that it is quite disempowering. There aren't many "aural" ways to understand quantum mechanics. I am concerned that "accomodating different learning styles" is really just about dog

The facts are not irrelevant. The kind of critical thinking you will gain after learning about medical experimental protocols is not the same critical thinking you will learn by doing needlework.

If you don't want to sit through the whole thing, check out the segment 1:20 to 1:50. When a gamer can do something that surprises the designer, that's pretty damn cool. Interestingly the Ars Technica review said that this is a game you wan

I have found the kubuntu KDE4 a bit flaky and font-poor (especially the earlier versions). I run KDE4 at home from the gentoo repository and it is rock solid and the fonts are fine, so I am not sure what is going on there. A bit beside the

Good post. I would go as far as saying that not listening is the cardinal sin of any kind of management - I have seen some of the same issues come up with employee management. Basically, don't fear to explain your problem and your propos

Is this on HN for the sole reason to make the rest of us feel bad about not taking the time to make animal-shaped foodstuff for our kids? (PS: I have a couple of the "Laptop lunches" boxes - they are okay but a tad overpriced IMHO).

Erm, it does depend on which part of the scientific community you are talking about - we're not all a monolithic Borgian block you know. There are a bunch of non-programmers using the Perl Data Language for example (pdl.perl.org). The real

I am sorry you are having a rough time. I think writing a journal, especially a private or anonymous one, is an exercise in introspection (where it is not a short-term venting exercise). While that can be fruitful for certain kinds of probl

While we're at it, the name "LISP" is obsolete. It's reminiscent of variants of the broader lisp family of languages, circa 1980. We're talking about Common Lisp instead, often shortened to "Lisp", being a much more modern language." (Unl
