A reminder of how small the tech world is: notice the first name in the "Timeline" pane in the Twttr screenshot: "Kevin Systrom". This would have been about four years before Instagram (was Systrom still an undergrad at Stanford then, even

I love this idea. Sure, one day it could evolve into what we might of now as a "robot friend," but I view this as an experiment in what humans can find patterns in. We're known for things like finding faces everywhere and ascribing meanin

This is a common misconception. Bitcoin isn't anonymous, but there isn't really a way to use your addresses as an "identity" easily, either. Sure you could use a Bitcoin address as the keypair it is to authenticate yourself, but that seem

I don't know. On the one hand, it's very easy to see Bitcoin failing as a currency and disappearing within a few years. On the other hand, the aggregate value of all Bitcoins in circulation is ~$120M with millions of dollars worth of Bitc

There are many exchanges that trade BTC against traditional currencies (for example, mtgox, btc-e, or bitstamp). It's very easy to convert BTC into USD or EUR.

Bitcoin's really easy to use. 1. Download the client from bitcoin.org. 2. Launch it and let it sync with the network. (Unfortunately this takes a long time upfront.) 3. Use the "Send Coins" and "Receive Coins" tabs to send and recei

FYI that's not a bell curve. It looks much more lognormal or Beta to me (or even Weibull or Gamma could fit it, if you didn't care about how meaningful the parameters were, or wanted to get creative in interpreting them). If you go with Be

I think you overestimate most biology labs. It's really easy to screw up a protocol in subtle ways. Often it took the original lab weeks of debugging to get it to work (yes, to get it to work, not to produce a false positive). Things get mo
