You seem to be relatively new here, so you may not have read the guidelines: https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html You're being pretty abusive in this thread, which in turn has provoked others to be abusive,

What I mean is that they don't say "Scan this QR code with your time-based one-time password (TOTP) app." They say "scan this QR code with your Google Authenticator app" or "scan this code with the HMRC app&quo

I love (hate) the idea of a site where you need to send a personal email to the webmaster to be whitelisted.

That is definitively what they were when the term "podcast" was new and I was trying to figure it out - and in any case this seems like rather pointless hairsplitting.

TOTP suffers from a similar issue - I use 1Password to store my TOTP codes, but both Google and the UK's HMRC tax website talk about using their own apps for codes rather than anything agreed like "one-time passwords". The d

I get that this this is a way to do it in practical terms, but isn't that just like having to have two passwords for each site (outside the fact that passkeys are a bit more secure than passwords)? I thought one of the main points of p

I guess, but doesn't that start to feel like the tyranny of productivity? If it doesn't take long while you're the urinal it doesn't take long just afterwards too, and then you can enjoy the feeling of having a pee! (Per

I would always have a copy of The Economist, New Yorker, NYRB, LRB or similar when I was travelling around London, so avoiding boredom was a priority for me even then. Much more restful to read a physical magazine though, and the only thing

Something new that I've seen is men standing at urinals on their phones. It really blew my mind that they can't even take a pee that lasts maybe 20-30 seconds without looking at their phone. What could you possibly do in that time

I didn't read it that way at all. It felt to me like the author thought video stores were terrible too, just in a different way, and the main point of the article was the different incentive structures for the pre-streaming movie compa

That depends, as the comment you replied to shows, on how they respond to that. I'm an atheist, but one of my wife's best friends is a dyed-in-the wool catholic, and we get on really well despite that fundamental difference. He ha
