the article certainly does not endorse the claim you are responding to: "Bicycle helmets prevent neither concussions nor death" Incorrect. The article makes the strong and accurate claim that there has been no clear, measurable

The injuries prevented by a helmet with a fall are essentially non-events. The helmet makes no measurable difference to the stuff you care about: dying or being brain-damaged.

Why would people buy an expensive watch like this when a simple bicycle helmet could save their life? Especially if it is a MIPS helmet (because the previous non-MIPS ones apparently did not work despite all the claims they did)

The odds become uncomfortably high for the elderly. In the U.S., falls are the leading cause of both injuries (at 7 million/yr) and death from injuries (at 27 thousand/yr) for the elderly[1] There should be a law forcing them to

I am not misrepresenting the paper: it attempts to explain why countries with mandatory helmet laws see _no_clearly_measurable_reduction in KSI (Killed, Seriously Injured) rates. More cyclists wear helmets in those jurisdictions (parts of

It seems highly likely to me that the Culture of Fear that pervades affluent western societies will exactly lead to what you predict. And those of us that do not wear a permanent tracking device will have some sort of financial (insurance r

Then his helmeted head hit the ground so hard it knocked him unconscious — hard enough for his Apple Watch to feel it. “A hit that hard could have killed me if I weren’t wearing it,” Burdett said. He had to replace the helmet. Sigh. Bicy

He asks her out on a date. She says no. He moves on. Is the Wired article mis-representing the gist of Christine Corbett Moran's complaint? Or is the author subtly trying to undermine her?

On the off-chance that some WeWorkers are reading this, the only way I could be persuaded to share a space with someone who foments spontaneous frissons at bagel breakfasts is if you also supply high-powered Nerf guns.

He keeps saying that it's not that harmful; that images are fine; that coercion isn't force. That's a lie on your part isn't it? There are very grave points to make about rms's statements but you are doing no one

I'm not sure that that's what rms did. This Guardian article makes me think that he has been unfairly treated. Even though I think that he is completely wrong to assume that an elderly man could reasonably expect that a very youn

Hmm... if the Roy Moore controversy is anything to go by the US religious zealots are in tune with the French in this respect. Maybe the other Americans are right on this one?

How would you know whether someone was coerced? Would they tell you?

That is a good point. And it seems that it applies to prostitution at other ages too. But a lot of sex workers would challenge that.

I disagree. The F/OSS part is the most important. Rockbox allowed an incredible degree of customization. For something like a music/audiobook player personal tastes in interaction with the a small device mean that configurability

Knowing how to flex your ankles and set the seatpost height and gear ratio correctly lends itself to a style known as spinning that reduces the need to have the foot completely latched into a pedal while you mash and pull.

True about Sansa not being FOSS, but it was at least flashable with FOSS due to the effort of the Rockbox community. I looked at the AGPT Rocker, but again, it's way too large (IMO) for its simple function. And needlessly expensive.

None of those are small. And they are not that cheap either. I think this is an obvious market opportunity -- small, cheap, open devices doing one thing well. No need for massive screens, touch screens , just a couple of buttons, a batte

A bit OT, but related: there are no cheap, simple, FOSS mp3 players. It used to be that you could get a Sansa which was flashable with Rockbox¹, had a decent battery life, cost around US$30 and would take SD cards. Those options have now
