That's the exact phrase that stuck out to me too. Reminds me of Java developers who exclusively use GWT to build web apps because they want to "abstract away" the browser component of the web app and write it like an applet or desktop app.

Reading this makes me appreciate that my wife is also a software engineer and instantly understands things I talk about. We've been together for a long time (met near the end of college at RIT) but it's one of those life perks that I take f

Thanks! There really aren't many, which was a key reason why I put some together. There are lots of free PSD sites, but obviously they don't include any instructional material. However they are great to poke through to see how things are co

I wrote a 30+ page guide/book called Building iOS Apps From Scratch a few months ago, here's a link if anyone is interested. http://designthencode.com/scratch/

Re: updating your app all the time for discoverability, on the flip side of that coin is that if you update your app frequently you'll also lose glowing 1.0 reviews frequently, to be replaced by the often-less-glowing 1.1 reviews. This is a

It's more computationally expensive to calculate, draw and attach tap events to rows in a UITableView if you're trying to still keep 60fps scrolling. It's hard enough to get glass-like scrolling with dynamically-loading avatars and random s

The switch to a grouped tableview is one of the worst UI decisions I've seen Twitter make. Mobile screens are small so wasting horizontal space is a cardinal sin. Padding on either side of tweets might look good at first glance but it makes

This is a little too meta... I tweeted that (that's me!) but the link to Zuck's photos was found further down in the comments here on HN. That's where I saw it.

Unveiling things by having a velvet curtain or cloth on top (and then lifting it up!) has been done for decades, perhaps centuries. It's not unique to Apple or to 37signals, it's a common occurrence that they were expressing digitally.

I may be in the minority here, but I've received more than a few of these emails (people offering to buy me lunch to discuss an idea) and I always turn them down. Here are my reasons: 1) I typically go to lunch with my friends/coworkers and

The software successes I see in the App Store take a two-pronged approach: launch with a polished 1.0, but then iterate quickly with similarly well-built .1s, .2s, etc. The upside of releasing multiple updates after a good 1.0 is out the do

Pentile may be great engineering but the colors it shows are not true, and it has significant banding across solid colors. As an interface designer, it makes my eyes bleed and my graphics look sub-standard.

Nice snarky response, not sure it's warranted. There are lots of UI design techniques that work great on desktop that don't work at all on mobile, for various reasons, mostly because there are other interface paradigms that take their place

There's a difference between "looking like something I'm familiar with" and "working like something I'm familiar with". The problem with bad skeuomorphic design is when it looks familiar but doesn't act like the thing it's mimicking. A

I was a long-time TextMate user. The main advantage that ST has of TM is that the Go To Anything (files, functions in a file) feature is much, much faster than TextMate's. It also shows you the contents of files as you type, so you can sn

I think we all saw what we wanted to see. I wanted an iPhone 5 and journalists wanted to write about an iPhone 5 so that was the story we all focused on. Looking back there are multiple signs that the 4S was going to be the only new model i

That's the price if you sign up for a 2-year contract. This is typically how they show the prices of iPhones since most consumers in the U.S. have no idea what a phone costs before the subsidy is paid by the carrier (and wouldn't pay it.)

I stand corrected! I got confirmation from both Joe Hewitt and JazzyChad that they are indeed webviews used in many places now instead of native tableviews. Disregard everything I said :)
