I generate about $1000/mo from an iPad app I wrote (that I haven't updated in a long, long time) and then between $5-10k from iPhone user interface design/development tutorials that I sell.

There's surprisingly few pointers here related to actual graphics programming, that is, the math that's involved, physics you need to know, color programming fundamentals (gamma, colorspaces, etc.), hardware support and GPU programming, etc

HN views seem to be slanted on this subject. It's not "hedging" or "being cautious" as much as it is just being smart. Working on a business in your spare time till it makes more money than your full-time job is what most people who have bi

A large issue of the revenue difference is that you can return apps for up to 24 hours on Android but you can't return an iPhone app. Because of this, friends of mine who use Android phones will routinely download an app to use for a specif

Perhaps, but, the downside, is that free Android apps that make no money don't really pay your bills. Doing apps on the side is one thing, quitting your job and working on Android apps full-time is quite another. I don't see many posts abou

As an iPhone developer, I just don't really care anymore about the size of one app store versus another. It's all about which store you can make real money from. Apple has paid out over $2 billion to developers (data from March 2011) and wh

There's a gigantic difference in sales potential when you choose to make an iPad game (like the author did) and an iPhone game. The iPhone & iPod touch market is way, WAY bigger and has a much larger financial upside. If you want to mak

You do realize that by doing this technique you're not physically taking money out of airline pilots' wallets, right? Airlines already screw over pilots (WSJ says average starting salary for a commercial airline pilot is ~$30k) so I don't t

Yup, there's not a distinct correlation between buying early and getting the best price. Sometimes the best price doesn't show up until a week before the departure. Sometimes the best price is attained when purchasing months prior to depart

I'd definitely suggest not caring about where your UI designer is located. It's hard enough to find decent UI people without forcing them to live in Western NY. Some of the best UI people I know live in Europe, Mexico, New Zealand, etc. If

I'd highly suggest paying a professional user interface designer to take a look at every screen of your app and offer suggestions and/or redesigned mockups. It looks like you're using nearly all stock UIKit widgets (default buttons, default

This is the testament to the reach of the App Store. Your app is targeting an incredibly small, niche market, and you're still selling hundreds of copies.

As an iOS developer, I can't stress how important this metric is. I don't care if Android gets 70%, 80%, 95% marketshare if the App Store is generating way, WAY more money for developers.

I heard a few people at the next table talking at a restaurant about the new Thunderbolt. Try said it's "a droid" and it was a solid phone because Microsoft built it. I won't comment on if the percentage is valid or not, but a LOT of normal

It's only dangerous if you forget to call super's drawRect. Call that at the top of your function (to get the default graphics that UINavigationBar draws, and whatever else Apple does in there, probably nothing) and then do your own drawing

Overriding drawRect to do your own drawing is probably the most common thing that iOS developers do when working on custom interfaces. I'm not sure why you think it's dangerous, it's a public API call. I think almost every app developer I k

Besides your point, the only other downside is that the red line is in the navigation bar, not directly below it. If it's a pixel or two tall it's probably fine but if it's 4+ pixels tall it'd probably make the vertical spacing of element

Couldn't you just draw the red line in drawRect of a UINavigationBar category? Then it'd appear in every navigation bar of your app, in the UINavigationBar, and not lost in some other hierarchy anywhere else.

For normal people there's already a tool that does that: Facebook.com. Facebook is the Internet for a huge % of Internet users. I don't even think there is a pain-point.

Same happened here. It's totally blank until more people around you actually have & use the app. Which no one will do because... it's blank unless other people use it. Classic chicken or the egg problem. I guess $41 million doesn't buy
