The killer feature of AirDrop is that it's built in. Impossible to compete against network effects like that.

Interesting, my own experience has been the opposite. From what I remember v1 was constantly broken, initial v2 was not much better but now everything is very smooth all the time.

I wouldn’t see it as a problem if human actions were systematically recorded into a structured dataset to be used as training data. But it seems from the article that the labor is not used for this purpose at all.

App being open-source means you can compile and build it yourself. They've also gone to extreme lengths to prove that the software running on their servers has not been tampered with: https://signal.org/blog/privat

Downvotes are probably stemming from general hatred of cryptocurrencies. After all they “stole” the word crypto in mainstream media, just like criminals “stole” the word hacker long time ago.

It would be good to at least once mention somewhere if it's cryptography or cryptocurrencies. Even FAQ just calls it crypto all the time. (It's cryptography)

This might be news to people not familiar with high tech job salaries, likely the Dice audience. So as general news it’s quite valid. On HN I doubt anyone is surprised by this.

Silk inspired my Christmas Postcards project. It's now offline, but I have displayed best drawings on my site: https://lekevicius.com/projects/postcards/ At the time it was discussed quite a bit on HN: https

Still works on iOS 13. It’s quite reassuring that after all the posturing about obsolescence and depreciations it’s still there.

The reason why I added HTML qualifier. Closed source tech cannot be trusted to be maintained. JS/HTML can.

I'm very happy for every web port. Old games, old OSes emulated, old apps. Please, port / emulate everything! I've recently bought one of my childhood games (Pharaoh, released 1999) from GOG and struggled for hours to run it

It is amazing how vibrant the macOS-exclusive UI design ecosystem is, with many high quality apps: Sketch, Flinto, Principle, IconJar, PaintCode and more. The second best ecosystem is web apps, spearheaded by Figma, and arguably Adobe'

This looks extremely similar to Principle app, even down to how some concepts are called (Driver for gesture-driven transitions). I’m a big fan of PaintCode and the quality seems pretty high, but it seems to lack a couple of features that m

Apple should really rethink their extension strategy. Other platforms require a click of a button. Safari requires either going through the App Store, or doing Dev Mode shenanigans.

As Marco Arment once said, if Soulver isn’t open he’s not working. Rings true for me as well. I almost always have it running to help me through some calculation or more complex modeling. Highly recommended.

As subsidies and taxes can be used to incentivize and disincentivize behavior, I’m happy about this. Flights have truly large ecologic costs, and flyers need to be aware of that, trying to minimize travel if not necessary. I’m particularly
