It has ferry service to SF, so commute wise it's not terrible. Just be aware that the ferries don't run super late, so you'll be restricted when it comes to staying out late after work. Downtown is decent (although a shell of

To add to the other answers, it varies heavily by variety of vegetable. E.g. parsnip seeds, even when stored in airtight containers in the fridge, will rarely last beyond a year, whereas tomato seed viability can easily exceed 10+ years. I

I was vital enough to my full time employer that I knew they'd give me some contracting to hold them over. And, I had a couple of contacts who I knew were interested in my doing some work for them. I started planning 3 months before I

On the flip side, founding a company can actually give you more time back, depending on the company. I started a consulting biz last year, and have a ton more vacation, slack days by choice, evenings and weekends than I did when working my

It's not quite as simple as that, though. To, for example, send money from the US to Kenya via bitcoin, you need somebody in the US who is willing to sell you their bitcoin in exchange for dollars, and somebody in Kenya who is willing

That's unfortunate -- I find browser based debugging to be clunky. The beauty of the classic devmode was ability to work in my IDE.

That's not the whole picture. The article doesn't directly mention the economic benefits from more people being able to access an area. My guess is that it works something like this: Let's say you change a 3 lane road to a 6

I reported a series of bugs about the Java / Play plugin a couple weeks back. The support guy did some investigation and filed a few internal tickets...so they're working on it.

People use SSL every day and I bet most of the population, software engineers included, don't understand it. In fact most of the population probably don't even know that they're using SSL.

This is good -- choosing the right language is important. Cryptographers seem to be worse than average software engineers when it comes to designing interaction that is usable by mainstream users.

Not bollocks at all. Non-technical people shouldn't be expected to understand implementation details in order to use a system. Key exchange can be done without exposing users to the details of the system.

The NSA is routinely intruding on desktop installs. How will client side crypto help if they get to patch binaries on target computers?

That's not true. Client side encryption allows the server to never have to touch user-generated content, which makes defense against subpoenas (and certainly blanket wiretapping) more feasible. It doesn't defend against the NSA wh

Parents / mainstream users don't even understand the concept of keys. Keypairs are a technical detail that everyday (/non-apologist) users should not be exposed to.

OpenID Connect is what you'd want to support, not OpenID 2.0. Google, probably the largest OpenID provider, is shutting down OpenID 2.0 support altogether in a year, and has turned off access to new clients as of this month. Thus, issu
