I don't think the name matters, what matters is that they built the brand early on and were daring enough to build separate brands for their products. Sure, "Meta" _means_ something, but Apple (now) does, too, by association.

I'd argue Apple started this loooong ago. Their first few products where literally named "Apple", but then they quickly moved towards establishing independent brands for all products, starting with the Macintosh, I believe. T

Reminds me of how I solved some of the hardest problems I've ever worked on (all in side projects) while being on parental leave, pushing around strollers. During that time I had something of 1-2 hours at the keyboard each day, but end

I doubt anyone needs this, but I want to buy it just for the product description! It's full of gems, e.g. "Sort of sleek mobile design experience with colors, numbers, and wobbly eyes that will turn heads". Can't tell if

I literally trained the correct technique as a child because I was so into computers. I'd argue children today are far less exposed to keyboards than people (well, nerds) my age were.

Some cool stuff I had no idea exists! But I can't see anything I feel like picking up, I do like to keep it simple. I switched to Emacs after something like six years as a vim user, primarily for the more beginner friendly key bindings

Well, I believe there's something in-between what the author asks for, and what you describe. I certainly don't want to have a "move fast and break things", "post privacy" kind of car. I prefer solid engineerin

I think it's pretty much choice-supportive bias, thanks! The more costly it is to make the wrong choice, the more is invested into rationalising the decision, the stronger the bias.

I can relate, I have three and I feel it does give my life more meaning. But I still feel like pointing something out: Know that phenomenon where users that paid for software are typically more satisfied with it and give better ratings than

I suppose the author is - in business language - describing the problem that data driven goal setting makes an organisation chase local maxima. I definitely agree! Seen more than one company go down from this. I guess part of the issue is t

Yup, in my experience any data driven goal setting steers teams towards short term wins, with potentially disastrous long term losses. Long term value creation is a lot harder to prove, but I still always try to push for it. But most organi

As much as TFA reflects how I think, it reminds me of how I thought about Dropbox - I never had a need for it because for reasonably technical people, it was always trivial to set this kind of thing up using ancient technology. I suppose si

Funny enough, as a guy hiring in house developers deliberately and regularly, I got the impression that salaries in previously "cheap" countries are normalising to what folks earn in US/Europe - which could make offshoring le

As a CTO for a good decade now (mid sized and small companies), I agree. At my previous (big-ish) company I maneuvered myself into a position where, before I left, I largely had to make business decisions and build bridges based on what my

I suppose parent's argument is in relation to number of units produced, not revenue. From a comment below, Toyota sold about 7-8 times as many cars as Tesla on the US market. _Almost_ an order of magnitude, I'd argue.

Did you try telling them that that is _absolutely_ how "agile" works? Even Scrum, the way most companies adopt it meticulously, is just a list of recommendations. The key is that the team finds a process that works for them and ke

To me daily stand ups, and most other rituals, are an OK way to _train_ desirable behaviour. If nobody knows what their team mates are working on and nobody says anything when they're blocked, you probably want to change that one way o
