>"Wokeness has gone too far, but I don't really have any concrete examples, I just guess it has somehow haha" I mean you have to have something to make such a claim in your op. As for Trump, yes maybe they are not precisel

What is the nuanced thing you want to discuss? Maybe just talk about something specific instead of just some broad “woke has gone to far”.

Makes me think of some sort of symmetrisation. So for a 6 sided dice, you roll it 6 times in a row. You discard your 6 rolls unless you get a permutation of {1,2,3,4,5,6}, and in that case pick one of the rolls consistently, eg the first or

With 99% certainty, every luxury SUV with fancy tyres and wheels in my suburb is definitely not a farm vehicle, nor has it ever been used off road.

I disagree, polluting vehicles are basically an enemy occupying force in our cities. Unless it’s a work vehicle, emergency services, there’s no reason to drive such a thing around a city. It’s not like the owners have no choice too, they co

Most suburbs in a big city are infested with people driving cars. If that was reduced and it was no longer fashionable to own a fast loud car it would be great. Lockdown with hardly anyone on the road was wonderful.

I’d be happy if it eliminated cars driving around through my suburb loudly at night. Eliminating rampant consumerism sounds great too.

I don’t disagree that computer science intuition isn’t interesting, or that CS people can’t contribute. There are plenty of deep connections all over the place. You can conjecture all you want. My issue is with the tone.

Except if they are framed as authoritative statement, rather than a genuine question or even wild conjecture. Then if a non expert reads it, believes it comes from someone expert, they can then take away something completely incorrect. Yes

Amusing to see all the pessimistic comments form programmers who have zero understanding beyond high school maths thinking somehow there is a magic solution to all the problems in physics like you can just refactor everything. Quantum field

Come on, in this case it’s pretty obvious, your website was not doing anything of value. Just a random middle man expecting to be paid for existing. Put your promo code on your website fine, but then wanting to advertise on it? That just se

I agree, but even more generally avoid abbreviations. A reader has to spend time thinking about what you are talking about. It’s detracting.

Why on Earth would I want to use the command line to look at who called me? When has that ever been useful for you? Personally I can’t imagine a more awful thing than using the command line on a small phone screen to do any serious developm

A neural network is only producing a probably bad approximation (but maybe visually okay) solution to the Navier stokes equations. The real lava lamp is doing it exactly. Maybe the neural network produces good enough looking pictures and it

I’m sure we could dim the cities after 12am. Also lights are not the solution to crime, it’s merely preventing some symptoms rather than addressing the actual issues. I think it would be great to also impose noise limits/ car curfews.

I don’t know, being nice to car drivers is a bit like appeasement, I think a bit of passion could be good. I think on HN at least you can try and empathise as to why they might feel so strongly. IRL of course you could use a bit of a more d

Why do it numerically? Show that e^ix converges, then you can reorder the sums, grouping the odd and even terms you get series expansions for cos(x) and i sin(x).

They are rightfully worried about old commits? Maybe it's time they switched to a more secure language which can more easily detect malicious code. To be honest C seems critically insecure without a whole lot of work. If a bunch of exp

The continued fraction form is particularly nice. It seems it is just a nice way to write a completion. Consider the approximation for sqrt(x): Pick a, b such that x^2 > a and b=x^2 - a. Then there is a continued fraction of the form: x

The sequence is certainly not useless?? This is how you construct real numbers. It is what is called a completion. A real number is a sequence of rationals. You take the space of all sequences of rationals and then quotient out by an ideal
