That wasn’t actually true on the boards I’ve tried, MangoPi MQ-Pro being the most recent. Look here for more details: https://linux-sunxi.org/Allwinner_Nezha Maybe if it had a “standard” U-Boot flashed onto a SPI chip you c

Ultimately, you cannot make it use less energy than the amount of calories you want to put in. It’s a viable technology but only if you have cheap energy or if transportation costs go ballistic, there’s no way to beat thermodynamics on this

Sounds like you can make it with an iPhone app and a 3d printed lens cover. Obtain all iPhone models, run calibration for each with known samples, and store the profiles. It’ll work similarly to those heart rate measurement apps.

Unironically I’d hate a new bridge across the Hudson around the Holland Tunnel, that area is the crown jewel of Manhattan and its seafront should be protected. It’s also one of the few safe bike paths in the city where casual bikers would f

When I moved to NYC from Kyiv, I was actually surprised by how chill the traffic in New York is. Obviously it can get annoying around bridges and tunnels, but outside those areas it’s pretty easy to get around, and I live on the west side o

This is neat, but I wish we’d move from retrofitting Gaggia Classics to something more modern. Decent Espresso showed us that boiler machines for home use are a dead end, because they have too much thermal mass for rapid switching between b

I also stopped reading on the ego depletion bit. Unless you’re CEO or something, you probably need to make more decisions, not less.

Insane article with its focus on “clean” fusion as if we already have dirty fusion. > “Inventing fusion reactors that produce net energy is one thing, delivering it as a reliable, grid-ready source of electricity is another.” If it’s su

Alternatively one could go for Barebox, it’s neat and standardized like Tow-boot, but it’s not phone-focused and works on many more boards.

Man, I’m always jealous when I hear these tales of how things used to be here. I came to New York in early 2021 and my experience is completely different - it’s basically 24/7 grind and this kind of hacker fun seems inconceivable now.

You can, and a lot of people do, have fully deterministic Ethernet connections, e.g. EtherCAT.

IMO buying a hackable 3D printer is the best way to get practical experience with kinematics, motors, stepper controllers, etc. The standard recommendation is to buy an Ender 3, but it’s very slow by today’s standards. I’d recommend Flsun V

I don’t think these boards are meant for the way people are trying to use them. Mainline Linux support is actually great on RK3566 chips, but you have to build your own images with buildroot or something like that.

This looks awesome! Looking forward to trying it over binwalk! I'd be great if you could get it building on aarch64 and non-Linux system, I've tried adding the flake to my nix dotfiles on Mac, but quickly realized you support only

There's no way stuff like this will ever be mass produced, but it's actually not that difficult to assemble this. You'd need: - Find components from Mouser/DigiKey/etc - Order PCBs w/ a stencil from JLCPCB&#x

Actually, in the long-term, waste-heat management is the only problem. Every other problem can be geo-engineered away, but we could never geo-engineer away thermodynamics.

Depends. If we're talking about high performance, yet expressive language without a steep learning curve, I say Swift. The only major drawback right now is lack of pure Swift AWS SDK. And unfortunately, AWS team has no plans to write o

That was just a harmless (I hope) hyperbole. I've actually used Go a couple of times for image processing workers and such. And that's when I developed my distaste for this language. I mean, I get it, it's easy to pick up and

Using a compiled language is not a premature optimization if you're not sacrificing expressiveness. With that said, Go is not the best choice. Like, for anything.

The hardware is fine. I wouldn't say the same about OSes. Desktop experience with Linux is incoherent. Windows and OS X are legacy monsters with 20 years of piling new features on top of not exactly rock solid foundation. Every time I
