The absence of private contributions makes the chart rather meaningless. Take for example The Netherlands: a pledge of 4.3 million dollars according to the data. This was an initial pledge by the government shortly after the disaster. In th

I remember buying a boxed version of SUSE Linux a long time ago. Other distributions have tried that business model as well. It doesn't work. Most Linux users expect software to be free of charge.

Are there YC funded startups that are based outside the US? I know a Dutch startup that received an invitation for an interview, but don't know if they got in.

It is possible to write a Silverlight client that understands Adobe's RTMP protocol if you really need it, but for non-live streaming to a Silverlight player i recommend IIS with smooth streaming on the origin server(s). The media chunks ar

Try out stuff How common is that at Microsoft? My perception is that few Microsoft employees participate in projects not directly related to their work, even if it's Microsoft technology. Take for example F#. I haven't seen much from Micr

The free inbound transfer is obviously a reaction to Microsoft's pricing. Windows Azure has free inbound transfer during off-peak hours until June 30 (see http://www.microsoft.com/windowsazure/faq/#pricing ).

I don't think it is useful to bring attention to that. Hacker News readers familiar with AWS will recognize the name. A certain amount of pseudo-anonymity may encourage people like him to post more on HN.

With MinGW you can cross-compile from Linux (and perhaps also from FreeBSD). Imho Cygwin is not suitable for applications like tarsnap that should be very reliable and fast.

The situation for 64-bit Windows is similar ( http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/ticket/1884 ). I imagine it will be even more difficult to find someone with extensive low-level Windows and Unix skills to create the Windows port.

It does not take much time to contact them personally and let them know about your site. A bit of courtesy in the startup world is never wrong.

Firefox does not support MPEG-4 video because of patent licensing issues. Firefox supports Ogg files with Theora video and Vorbis audio. Google has an agreement with MPEG LA and is therefore able to ship an MPEG-4 AVC decoder with Google Ch

I like both Haskell and F# so perhaps i can give some reasonable counter-arguments. 1) F# will be integrated in Visual Studio 2010. Large commercial companies like banks use F#. It is very unlikely that Microsoft will drop it. 2) Actually t

Reading the pdf makes me appreciate Haskell again. It seems really complicated whereas using STM in Haskell is simple. One paper by Simon Peyton-Jones explains STM much better than this large user guide.
