I can see the company being upset at attempting to leverage an internal position for more money at the current, but denying the move entirely is bizarre to me. I know several people who have interviewed within the company, not in an unduly

Other than making HR look like total fools, why was the offer rescinded? Presumably the hiring manager still wanted him for the role.

The more I think on it, the less certain I am one way or another. From a real-world standpoint, I would lower the thermostat say 15 degrees F during work hours, so re-heating that water when I return seems like it would be a definite negati

Would love for there to be an in-depth retrospective on what worked/did not for the porting once they get closer to releasing the first build.

Being a cheapskate, I did this when I lived in Chicago winters. My concern was sometimes I would forget to drain the water. I was creating a big thermal mass which my heater would have to work to maintain at equilibrium. This also has the b

Any alternative tools in this space worth considering? I normally use `python -m http.server` for a quick file share, but willing to lean on something more real which is equally easy to invoke. httpd2 looks like it might be a bit too opinio

Outside of veblen goods, aren't most consumer choices driven by price? I have never flown top tier air travel, but even the best experience is somewhere on the scale of cattle-car-in-the-sky. It is a necessary evil to get me to somewhe

Even if the government controls all of the Tor exit nodes, that does not give them omniscient knowledge. Presumably the wrapped communication protocols are still going to be encrypted. There would have to be a different information leakage

Annoying how they mix µs and ms inside the same timing column. Makes it harder to visually assess.

I think about this every time I see my corporate laptop spinning up because of bloated malware detection software, Teams, OneDrive, etc all seemingly unoptimized and burning resources across hundreds of millions of machines worldwide.

"Any idiot can build a bridge that stands, but it takes an engineer to build a bridge that barely stands." Engineering is all about fitting within your constraints. Make budget one of those limits and life will uh find a way.

I was just imagining how awkward it would be if you were the guy who stripped the screws off of humanity's first retrieved asteroid sample. Do they let the same guy keep going to the other screws or tap him out immediately?

Is that still true? With the size of the bases, I had assumed the network connection would be significantly more robust and/or higher bandwidth. How does the Icecube project or similar scientific experiments work? Or is it all still st

The other way to look at it: there are old planes still running that seem unlikely to have an installed GPS. Air flight pre-dates GPS.

It also depends on if you actually need the optimal solution. Getting a solution in your time budget, even if not guaranteed to be optimal, can be appropriate for many problems.

Some shows have aired with the music replaced. I recently re-watched Neon Genesis Evangelion, and the iconic closing music (Fly Me to the Moon) was replaced with something else entirely. We have entered 1984 where history is mutable.
