How do you identify a valuable book? Are there some 1000 well known valuable items you keep in mind? Or are you looking inside every jacket hoping to find an author's signature on a 1st edition? I assume the price of a false positive i

As a primarily Python programmer, I did not feel over-burdened by learning Rust. Sure, I never learned how to deal with lifetimes, never wrote a macro, and probably used clone a few places where I did not have the need. I was almost certa

Amusingly, the first thread in there opens up about how Docker security is comparable to a VM, yet today has a Docker exploit on the frontpage https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39250975

VLC is my daily driver, but I get a few audio buffering issues that do not appear to be present in mpv. mpv also handles incomplete/partially broken files significantly better.

Right. Microsoft pays for electricity of their server software. Hundreds of millions of consumers have to pay for the electrical usage brought on by the stack.

Just this week there was a story[0] with a subthread about how Docker requires you to mount a volume, so it is better than launching shell scripts directly. I know all software has bugs, but Docker did not prioritize security and is unfit f

Considering the Microsoft consumer software that burns cycles to do trivial things (Teams, OneDrive, pick your favorite example). I do not think language performance should be a compelling argument.

Wikipedia says this The relative increase in solar irradiation at closest approach to the Sun (perihelion) compared to the irradiation at the furthest distance (aphelion) is slightly larger than four times the eccentricity. For Earth&#x

HVDC is something like 3% per 1000km, so not really that bad. Price of solar is dropping by more than that per year.

It's even better because thanks to the Start Menu randomization process either could appear first in the results. Sometimes they will switch position after being presented.

This was a very minor plot point in the Revelation Space novel Chasm City. To make the world slightly more habitable, a lens was deployed at a Lagrange point to focus (filter?) light to be more amenable to humans on the new world.

So I am unclear on this. In Germany or the US, if you rob a bank, hide the money, get arrested, and serve a X year sentence, what happens when you are released? Could you use the money? You have already served for the crime. I suppose they

I would find it unlikely that a low level guy would have the connections to slip a phrase into the BBC and would think they have to be a spy with high level connections.

One estimate says that 30-50% of all human beings have toxoplasmosis, so I would put that as pretty low on the list of risks. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3963851/

A $20 toaster has overheat detection technology. Presumably other planes are doing this already. I am not understanding how there is a novel engineering problem to solve that could not be incorporated into the release.

However, Proton/Deck cannot play everything, which is where the trade-offs hit. The library support is continually improving, but that does you little good if your friends are all playing X, but that title only runs on Windows.
