Not sure how you concluded that it's a "somewhat Mac-centric" project. Can you elaborate?

Yes, and that's why Chromium moved to allow Rust code (pretty much like they did for Android).

You are absolutely wrong about Servo being revived just a continuation of the webrender project. Igalia has been leading the effort for about 18 months now, focusing mostly on the layout engine (which is not webrender).

That still leaves you with at least the layout engine, all the DOM apis, all the networking, multi process model & sandboxing, web extensions support, that are different implementations.

You can compare Servo and Ladybird results on wpt tests here: https://staging.wpt.fyi/results/?product=servo&product=ladyb...

Servo was never usable as a "real browser", and it's been revived since last year by Igalia. Looks like you should refresh your view on the project overall.

Some forks are using a nice patch based system: see how the Zen browser is built for instance ( https://github.com/zen-browser/desktop/ ). I think that's a better model than merging upstream updates into your o

There's already a GUI (launch firefox with the --profileManager command line flag), but it's very barebone.

In this case, being self contained will help implementing things like `eval()` and `Function()` since Porffor can self-host. That would be much harder with a LLVM based solution.

Why do you believe that a monthly donation will help against Google influence on the web more than dedicated feature work? That seems backward to me.

No I'm not talking about a fork. There are many things the team at Moco just has no time to work on and will happily welcome contributions.

But you don't store your whole photo library on a blockchain, right? The storage needs look vastly different here.

You can fund Firefox by pooling money and pay a developer or a company like Igalia to implement a feature you want. It's not trivial, but given the number of people on HN that claim they would pitch in, someone should really try that.

Both Firefox and Chromium are moving to Rust, incrementally. There are good reasons for that, like the fact that even their very good C++ developers are on board.

Autonomi pretends that the network will store your data forever in exchange of just an initial payment. This is a bold claim, and I'm not sure how this can work in practice - the docs didn't give much details.

No, Chrome doesn't eg. do style computation with a parallel algorithm like Firefox does since it adpoted Servo's style resolution engine. See how faster it is: https://nolanlawson.github.io/css-talk-2022/#70

The new interim CEO has been there for such a short time that she can't possibly have breathed life in anything (she managed to get sued by the former CPO for health based discrimination though, so there's that).

They switched their approach when they decided to turn the browser into an independent project, because that was the only way to get it done. Of course it's ok to change, but you can also consider that as a precedent and take anything

Check what is happening in Servo ( https://servo.org ). Some active members also want something very modular, and this is helped by work being actively done to use the engine in various contexts.

Also, it is easy to make bold claims early on, and at some point reality shows its ugly face. Remember that they already moved from "we re-implement everything" to "let's re-use the same libraries that other web runtimes

Servo was picked up from hibernation by Igalia about a year ago. They have made very good progress so far, also with a small team. The choice of c++ for Ladybird looks a bit odd, even from code reuse point of view since Firefox, Chrome and

Like many you are likely confused by the Foundation (MoFo) vs. Corp (MoCo) finances. You can only donate to MoFo, and indeed it doesn't spend much (if anything) paying Firefox staff. This is because Firefox staff is on the MoCo payroll

Very nice to see progress on this "modern" version! I have one question for you: how would you compare Freenet to Veilid ( https://veilid.com/ )?
