Why can't you construct or find your own examinations? They are, after all, just a set of questions. In fact, even in school, this is the way I learned... You write down questions, put the materials (far) away and work on it until you get

(Since I don't particularly care about my karma at the moment, I guess I'll continue beating this dead horse :-)) And here's my snarky rejoinder: Hey look! There are bug fixes and new features in the latest beta. How did they do that?

This made me laugh, WTF does "purpose of software development" actually mean? That phrase is itself a misunderstanding waiting to happen. :-) Yeah... Ok, I probably deserved a bit of a snarky reply -- I missed the 32-bit requirement for si

Flash video crashes constantly and it still doesn't work with netflix. Who cares about crappy 90's style GL demos? SOmehow, it seems priorities aren't quite right at mozilla, IMO.

Huh? Creativity is what humans do! For everything else we find a way to build machines to do it (or enslave other humans :-)). There are very good arguments that constrained creativity is the best creativity -- or perhaps the only creat

It really depends on what units of data your chain (in this case, an n-gram model) is dealing with. You can increase or decrease the granularity and modeling depth to get different kind of erroneous data using the same training data. For e

Well, for one, it treats poor people like criminals who need to be punished for being poor. Granted, we do that to a large degree in the US now implicitly, but this would be very explicit -- and, I feel, tremendously mean-spirited. More p

Seems like the post article just wants to belabor a point Bill Gates did not actually make. The points he did make, actually agree with the article's sources, but he does not reach the same overall conclusion. He did explicitly say that se

When (attempting to) think critically, you can't just choose to ignore the entire context. And when you're talking about both the kinds of sources and the order of magnitude or so difference, one estimate is not "just as useless". One esti

I think in aggregate, it helps. And it's hard to not be anonymous when you can be put on a black list. It's not like you're converting anecdotes to data in the typical sense. It's more that it illustrates the kind of abuse that can happen,

A "bug" is simply a reported issue that the developers feel must be fixed at some time in the future. It is defined just by existing in the database, and not being deferred or reclassified as not a bug. That's what I mean by bug count. It

Ok, you're taking "advertise" too literally. What I meant was that software typically is thrown out to the world to serve a certain function, I wasn't making a comment on advertising materials :-). I see what you're saying, but when you bui

I think code quality misses the issue. The right metric (IMO) is actually fairly easy: bug count perhaps normalized by project size or reach (number of customers). Whether the software does what it is advertised to do is the very definitio

I don't think of android as a "desktop". I don't see it as being useful for workaday stuff -- in the same way my iPad isn't really great for that. I'm doubtful, but I hope I'm proven wrong -- just because it'll be interesting to see it ev

I've always found the competition for the "linux desktop" to be somewhat weird. It will never "win" -- and who cares? If you're not sold on the Free Software manifesto or not dirt poor (or just cheap), why bother when the non-free alternat

You're going to notice 1.4G. Anyone who has taken more than 1000 photos and has put them in iphoto is going to notice 1.4G, or actually tried to use garageband is going to notice 1.4G.
