Oh yes I did. :-P I don't actually feel as strongly as this comment might sound -- use what you want to use -- but I wanted to get a dig in :-) When I used emacs extensively (in viper mode, before Vim really was popular and good vi alternat

This is typical Lisper fare. Steve Yegge is right. Open source math packages and academic software isn't "industry". Sorry. And the bit about not needing libraries is just insane. It doesn't make any real sense unless you're interested i

I fail to see the advantage (swipe, swipe, swipe, press) has over (move, press). Not to mention that trackpads are fairly sensitive to sweaty fingers. Do people really rely on multitouch gestures that much? Frankly, I don't get it. Track

I realize this isn't exactly the point of the whole exercise, but a stiff pancake that easily slides onto the pan is kind of cheating. :-) A deformable pancake would make the experiment batter.

(spit take) Heh... resistive screen and slow CPU. The year 2005 called and wants its N800 back. Until the competitors really start to care about excellence, Apple will continue to dominate. I say this not as a particular Apple fan, but ou

The perspectives in the comments are more enlightening than the article. In some sense, the article sets up a false dichotomy. It's possible to be very critical while still being humble and empathic. But it's really easy to make criticism

Would that change if the end goal, the project itself, were interesting? This type of thing always seems indicative of smart people working on dumb software to me. Or perhaps a type of avoidance behavior when things get overwhelming. Tha

This, of course, is time spent on the computer . If 15mins more time on google replaced 15mins of time masticating a sandwich, rescuetime isn't going to know about it.

Yes. This is borne out, IMHO, by the fact that even though everyone supposedly "knows" it's broken and how to fix it, it is by far still the most popular choice when you need very high performance with reasonable abstraction power in indust

This is depressing. How can you work for Microsoft, see that, and not be depressed? Whatever you think of the company's technology over the years, you have to wonder how old timers feel about starting a career at a software company and en

No, that actually wasn't the case -- although I can see why you'd think not. I typed in the graphics example from the BASIC manual[1] that gave you a blinky smily face and played with that. Ok, I went to printing and '10 print "hello" : go

One common theme, at least for the programmers growing up in the 80s, was that all the BASICs had graphics support. Like you, I didn't learn logic and control structures to print out tables of numbers, I learned it so I could make an object

I don't understand this. Why is it so hard to give someone the benefit of the doubt? The whole piece boils down to that. And it's very useful advice for arrogant computer dweebs. You can't just write people off like that successfully. And

Honestly, I think a majority of the time, people mock it because they don't understand it. I don't. I believe what you say about being offended entirely, but I find it almost impossible to wrap my head around the idea. Getting mortally of

Let me get this straight. If someone offers to sell you a cellphone ( any cellphone) that they "found", you're going to buy it and keep it until the owner of said property tracks you down and asks for it? And this is "good faith"? I call

This is a prototype for a major release by a company. It's not just a $600 phone, it's a $6Mil (or whatever factor of million) phone. Whether that's a valid amount to attach to it, I'll leave up the lawyers and pundits, but that, I think,

You bought a minimum $500 device and you're going to complain about a nominal upgrade fee? Why do people bitch about this? You have even less excuse if you're using a 3G version which costs $700 and charges you a min of $15 a month (assum

Well, given that the iPad runs the iPhone OS, I think you can generalize this to one case. Any app that needs to maintain a persistant network connection. That covers IM, streaming...and remote login (ssh, vnc, rdp, etc...)

My experience has been mixed. I used an Apple machine for a 3 years, then when I picked up a serveresque power box, ubuntu for a year, now I'm using a win7 on the same box. I briefly tried the hackintosh route, but it was unsatisfactory.

I got that, but that isn't enough. IM is almost as convenient. Again, I'm not trying to be contrarian here, I'm just saying it's not convenient if it's not useful. I don't think mouse drawing is useful. Maybe when more features come onl
