Sure you're drinking your VOSS but can you afford a home in SF? I would say it's a middle class aspiration to raise a family near your work. You'd be in for an "insane commute" if you had 3 kids and tried to work in

Excellent response. Part of my reaction to this story is self-defense and fear. I live in the US and from birth we're inundated with narrative about how we should live and what we should strive for. The nice house, nice car, nice job..

I fully expect they should own microwaves, refrigerators, tvs... just not cars prefaced with "luxury". Even middle class people have no business owning such things. Even the lowest of the low end Mercedes is 30k. That's way t

You sell it to buy food so you don't need food stamps. Poor people don't own luxury cars. Period.

The whole point is that somewhere along the way of being rich enough to buy it (if that was ever truly the case) to being poor enough to need food stamps, they should have sold it. Being "hard" to sell isn't an excuse. Real p

Well, yeah I do think spending 30k on a car when you make 120k is insane. The house price was almost reasonable given their income though.

Indeed. All the more reason not to buy one unless you're in rock solid financial condition (even then...). I guess I'm just having a hard time garnering sympathy for someone who displays such conspicuous consumption especially wit

Why would someone making a "combined 120k a year" even own a Mercedes in the first place? That's hardly enough money to waste on a luxury car.

Or, you know, people who aren't "a certain segment of US middle class". If you come from a different culture (NOT "weird" as a8da6b0c91d so rudely puts it), it can be a pretty difficult prospect facing burgers and &

Do you have the skills and access to proper ingredients to cook: Mexican, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Polish...? That's a pretty typical (and healthy!) diet in a large city. I myself have recently relocated to a middle US cit

Indeed, she offers no alternative. I suppose we're to sit around trading DFW novels and pretending that technology can't "disrupt" whatever industry we're working in. I'm not sure how that point of view is help

This may be the most overwrought piece of writing I've ever read. Can someone summarize it? I couldn't make it past the first page. It didn't seem like it was going anywhere insightful though.

Part of my aversion to this rumored deal is just what you say... Why should a technology company that's created a excellent product (iPod/iPhone) have to kowtow to a decaying old media industry by buying one of their "insider

The reports have been of Apple buying them both and this article mentions it as a "reason" for Apple buying Beats (Electronics|Music). You're right though, and it's entirely possible that the rumors and speculation are f

Any talk of Beats Music adding any value whatsoever to Apple is ridiculous. Beats Music is little more than Mog (a nearly valueless online streaming service) + 6 months of development time. Mog was very close to being out of business when B

The amount of time and resources poured into sports FAR out weighs any possible benefit. Make coding a more social/group activity... social problem solved. Have kids run during PE. Health problems solved!

This is already happening to boys and girls. See my comment below. No one is encouraged to code. It's not a popular activity. Up until recently it was basically asking to be socially shunned. Some boys either didn't care or didn&#

I think he's correct that the problem lies way upstream from the current gender imbalance of qualified candidates. AKA the US (can't speak for elsewhere) school system is fucked. Imagine a world where computer literacy was taught
