I second the GP's thanks. I know nothing about synths and really appreciated your explanation, and the passion with which you expressed it.

Cox's Orange Pippin is a good baking apple, as well. Holds its shape, and goes all custardy, rather than dissolving into mush. It's not as good as a Bramley. Does anyone in the US grow those commercially? Why not?

Clarification: "that tech" meaning the direct antecedent: "[AI] tech", not tech in general. I'm a Humanities guy, not an idiot. :-)

Oh, of course. Length requirements are important, for the reasons I explained up-thread. However, if teachers accept any old thing ("padding") to reach the count, then that metric is arbitrary, which (justifiably!) makes students

Don't get me started on college admissions essays. Rich kids pay other people to write them. Poor kids don't understand the class-markers they're expected to include. If AI consigns them to the dustbin of history it might be

Indeed. We need better English teachers. :-) We won't get them unless we appreciate both teaching and the Humanities more than we do. I was good, but by no means the best (75th percentile, maybe?). I loved doing it, but changed careers

The way I explained it when I taught English 101 to first-year university students: any substantive question can generate an answer of a paragraph or a life's work; in this assignment I expect you to go into this much depth. Of cours

That's bizarre! What a self-defeating decision. It's ironic that ~20 years ago (so, pre-YouTube) by far the best place to see all the trailers for all the current movies was www.apple.com/movies (or something like that): they

Oh, for sure. It's another consequence of making a metric the target. At one time a university degree had more than a signaling value (granted, it still does for many), but we decided to focus on maximizing degrees held, rather than th

Yeah, but that's the only actually creative part of writing. It's the bit that, once you reach a certain level of skill, becomes enjoyable. I mean, I know what you've described is what everyone will do, but I feel sad for the

To play devil's advocate: have a look at the way plants in a forest communicate with each other - even across different species! That's a complex network, in which individual plants could be analogized to neurons. Do I think fores

Yes, I agree with you about all of that. In fact, the transition (ie, progress) will come faster if we legislate more-stringent safety regulations, and strengthen workers' bargaining position° in regards to pay and working conditions.
