To be fair, Android has a hugely disproportionate number of API WTFs to choose from. It's an absolute mess.

Re FaceTime, I recently read an unsubstantiated but plausible comment that they'd run into patent issues that caused a redesign that caused issues open sourcing it.

IO is the type, not the value. Something that takes IO and returns IO wouldn't be optimized out for the same reason a negation wouldn't be optimized out simply because it takes an Int and returns an Int.

Yes. That's what I was trying to say with the "morally wrong because having and acting on those expectations reduces the opportunities given to members of those groups" bit. Creating uphill battles doesn't allow the situ

That's roughly right in a moral sense, but in a Bayesian sense I don't think it's unreasonable. If race (or background or country of origin, etc.) and some attribute (education, wealth, etc.) are correlated, and names and rac

You make an interesting point about the dangers of blindly "monetizing", but I don't think it's relevant to parent's comment for a few reasons (not the least of which that paying for software doesn't by itself

How many daily-use scripts do you suppose intentionally run `rm -rf /`? Cost-benefit for common use seams clearly in favour of adding a failsafe.

This really became more intuitive to me after studying German, where the idea of separable verbs was made explicit. I don't think things should be named "setInstanceUp" or anything like that, but you could see how "setUp

You make a very good point about ROI for non-obvious investments. I also agree with you that for many things like your general repair example, humans are better than robots for the time being. That's why I framed it as them having &quo

That's a bit of a straw man argument. Nobody's claiming that we can't; rather that to accomplish many of our goals, having a human as the physical actuator is a bad choice. Robots have the potential to perform nearly any give

That could happen but in a lot of strictly typed languages it would be non-obvious and special effort to do so. There's absolutely no justification to send ints when you have any reasonable chance of needing to change it to a string la

I usually do the same thing. Both the 32-bit issue (that issue being with JSON libraries, not the spec) but also: IDs are opaque tokens. If down the road it makes sense to use UUIDs or have a sharding hash or something else, you don't

My first thought was to enumerate the red flags I see (since there have been a fair number of investor-bait non-serious "space startups"): The team comprises CEO, CFO, COO, and VP-BizDev…no engineers, at least in the leadership. T

Cool! I did the `Session.prepare_request` change [1] and found the project maintainers extremely helpful and patient in discussing the best way to go about it as I stumbled around. It's a good codebase and an awesome library. [1] http

This is true on a micro, per-interaction scale. On a macro scale, it can be more beneficial in the long run for people's egos to be hurt when they're wrong. For someone like Torvalds, the macro scale of interaction matters a lot.

Fundamentally, I agree. I have my entire team set up with PGP keys. However, there's a huge training burden that needs to be overcome. People don't understand what it is, how it works, how to manage keys, what they can do securely or not, e

So, I actually grew up in the Mat-Su Valley. I lived in Palmer (a quick bike-ride from Wasilla) from 1987 through 2004. I was born in '86. My grandparents were some of the original settlers in the area in 1936. Sarah Palin's accent is not
