There's a reason MacPorts[1] uses Tcl for its package definitions. The packages for the most part look just like structured data, but it's just a Tcl DSL that allows them to e.g. write hooks in Tcl instead of having to embed a she

My comment wasn't complaining about HN focusing on the tech guy. It was specifically a response to the sentiment > It's insane how many really, really, good people we lose to tragedies like this A story about the tech guy is

It's insane how many people we lose to tragedies like this. Every person is valuable. We shouldn't just lament the loss of people with notable accomplishments. We should mourn every single person, and do what we can to prevent thi

That one didn't show code. I have to assume the code tests if the point is outside the circle before constraining it, similarly to how a later constraint tests if a point is inside the circle before constraining it (the one where you s

No worries about that, they didn't even plicate it to begin with. They exposed 8 wheels of cheese to 8 different types of music. This study was absolutely guaranteed to find that one of them "tastes better", given that if y

A car dealership is a middleman. A auto manufacturer is a platform. The car dealership sits between you and the manufacturer, making it easier for you to buy the car, but taking a cut. But you don't need the dealership in order to use

You’re saying you get value out of Spotify’s services. That’s good. Middlemen exist because they’re providing some value. Doesn’t make them not middlemen though. Ultimately, if I use Spotify to discover an artist, I’m going to continue payi

Spotify is essentially a middleman. Apple is much more, they’re building the entire platform.

Tumblr's porn ban has literally nothing at all to do with the App Store. The porn ban is because of SESTA/FOSTA.

The highest-grossing apps on the app store are not the ones that are crammed full of unskippable ads. Don't mistake that being a popular model for being an effective one.

That's a very good point. There's still a use for locale-insensitive diacritic-insensitive searches, but you're absolutely right that in most cases you'd want it to be locale-aware and therefore NFD isn't sufficient

In particular, Unicode codepoints 128-255 were explicitly defined to be the same as ISO-8859-1, which has a bunch of precomposed characters in it.

A surrogate pair can represent 20 bits, or 2^20 values. A single UTF-16 byte is of course 16 bits, or 2^16 values. 2^20 + 2^16 == 0x110000, which is precisely as many unicode code points as there are (0–0x10FFFF). Decoding UTF-16 (with surr

Ok so not using a lazy list for matches is basically just around avoiding the requisite allocation? I suppose if you consume the list immediately at the call-site the compiler could in theory after inlining convert it to the closure-based a

To be more clear, this flaw happened because way back when we thought UCS-2 was sufficient. Then UTF-16 happened and all these systems designed for UCS-2 had to be hacked up for UTF-16 instead.

Converting the function to act as a fold instead of just returning a lazy list, is that necessary because all the unboxing and strictness internally meant the matches couldn't actually be lazy?

Did you test to see if the download could be resumed? In an ideal world, partially-downloading the file would expire the link, but the server would still allow the file download to be resumed (but not restarted).

BTW "they" is a gender-neutral pronoun that has been used as a singular pronoun for over 600 years (longer than singular "you"), is less awkward than "he/she", and is inclusive of non-binary people.

It is a language issue, because the security hole is the fact that you can redefine the Array constructor or accessor methods. On a similar note, it's also crazy that you can't just use `foo instanceof Array` to figure out if some
