Thanks for being a relatively responsible pet owner. There aren’t enough of them.

What’s the lesson here? That software is insecure? Or that you shouldn’t trust your friends? Sad.

You should not buy him anything. You should cut him out of your life entirely. This is an egregious trust violation. I’d forgive a teenager of such thoughtlessness but if they’re an adult then they’re going to abuse you in other ways. They

If you like the sound of a higher noise floor and less dynamic range then vinyl might sound better to you. I’m not being facetious, some people genuinely prefer the sound of records.

REAMDE had a neat and clean concluding chapter and imo it actually made the book worse for it. So be careful what you wish for.

From previous interviews I have seen him say his process for writing those books was to hand write them for the first draft and then transcribe them into emacs as part of the editing process. Seems pretty sensible to me; get the thoughts on

Weird interpretation. I didn’t flag it but I’d assume people did because the article is kinda pointless.

On the contrary, I would get no pleasure from the salt if I were cheating. The pleasure entirely comes from feeling good at the game, so good that people feel the need to complain about it.

If speculating is a waste of time then this sub-thread is spectacularly pointless (and against HN guidelines btw). Think before you post.

Finding someone on line is a bit different to using a tool marketed as reliable by one of the largest financial entities on the planet. Let’s at least try to hold people accountable for their actions???

And let’s not pretend that Doom and Quake didn’t have several point releases after the fact. And that the team at id didn’t pull all-nighters to ship the games. Those games are far simpler (by at least an order of magnitude, maybe two or th

Google doesn’t need to offer anything because the servers are holding up just fine under the load. These systems are trivially simple and cheap to operate by global internet standards.

Yeah I keep thinking about how different the reception to ChatGPT would have been if it were released by Google. People would be way more focused on how you can make it spout total nonsense with supreme confidence. (Which imo is the major f

You’re living in a fantasy land. If I had a major criticism of Google in the past decade it’s that they don’t release early or often enough. If you think people are dissatisfied with google search then you’re missing the point that people d

Both companies have been doing AI work for a long time. Do you really think google is behind on AI here just because they haven’t released any products? What do they stand to gain by pushing out half-baked toys? They have nothing to prove.

I work at google and have used their AI tools and they’re just as impressive as the OpenAI ones (which I use personally, outside of work). Both have been developing products, just google hasn’t released any of them.
